One Lawler thing on an In Your House that never fails to tickle me is when Chyna debuts and attacks Marlena.

Goldust: "THROW HER IN JAIL!"

Lawler: "That's where you should be!"

No Way Out (…of Texas) is pretty fun yeah with some exceptions. The abomination you mentioned being the main one.

The main event gets all the praise and rightly so, but I love Taka Michinoku vs Pantera from the undercard. Some of the stuff Pantera does in that match is incredible and that match alone instantly made me a fan of his. But sadly he was barely seen on WWF TV apart from that match. Look at this shit…

Unfortunately, the match is treated as an afterthought due to Brian Christopher being guest commentator. So it’s all Lawler and him denying being father and son, Japanese stereotypes and Brian making outright racist comments, at one point actually calling Taka “slant eye”. Another pet peeve is they keep going to a split screen to show nonce Lawler and his racist offspring at the commentary desk. As if hearing them wasn’t enough. So you’ve got Taka and Pantera busting their arses in there and the production is doing everything it can to distract you from the action.

The thing I remember best about No Way Out apart from Savin related disappointment but the match itself being chaotic fun, is how the 10 man tagged was billed as a “war of attrition” - which is such a wonky-sounding Vince-ism, they might as well have called it “stupendous donnybrook.”

Another gem from IYH 20: No Way Out…

Watched the main event this morning. Such a fun and chaotic match that feels like it’s only got better with time as the disappointment of Savio replacing Shawn becomes a more and more distant memory. And peak Austin, Foley, Funk and Owen is an even more awesome team in hindsight than it was in 98. A legitimate dream team up there and maybe better than any Survivor Series team ever.

As great as the match is, I can’t help wondering what it would’ve looked like if Shawn had been in it like originally planned. Picturing him in that madness, being a chickenshit twat trying to avoid Austin and set his goons on him would’ve been fun. Not to mention we would’ve got some Terry Funk vs Shawn Michaels interaction, which I’d have loved to see.

There's a bit in that match I've never figured, but at one point Terry Funk hits Road Dogg with what appears to be a bin bag filled with water or something. Always imagined that must have really stung and one of the most odd choice of weapons. It's at 13:10 in the link below as the full match is on Facebook. Trips and Billy Gunn put in some brilliant bumping and stooging in that match. It's SOOOO much fun to watch.

Going back through New Gen, I was reminded of the Warrior/Owen match from Raw. What an odd little bit of business this is. It's taped right after KOTR in the build to the six-man tag at International Incident. It features Gorilla Monsoon suspending the Warrior on TV, matching the legitimate suspension off TV but, they still air the match as if it was live right after Warrior found out the news with Vince and Lawler speculating about whether it's Warrior's last match and Vince commenting that he's surprised Warrior had as much focus given the news he's just received. It's really quite good for 1996 Warrior. It's almost like that Owen Hart lad was pretty great. 

The post-match stuff gives them a really obvious injury angle that they could have used to explain the swap to Sid for IYH. That they went with the legit stuff instead is testament to how much they wanted to shaft the Warrior. 

Love the intro and the graphics for the upcoming matches on the show. I absolutely love 1996 WWF. It's fantastically shit. Nostalgia is through the roof though.

The Owen match, as setup for a bigger match, always reminds me of Warrior's match with Tully Blanchard, although the latter was Tully's last match, not Warrior's as it was this time.

Is this the same show where Owen’s cast causes Ahmed to lose his qualifier to Vader and thereafter while unconscious receives the mouth-to-mouth from Goldust that serves as the impetus for their ICT match at King of the Ring?

Possibly the most “1996” episode ever if both matches were the same show. Could only be improved on if it was TVA twisted together with the one where Shawn and Ahmed wrestled the Gunns and Sunny got HBKs birthday cake all over her tits.

Or at least, I think that’s what happened. I’ll have to go back and check.

EDIT - Obviously Ahmed didn’t lose a KOTR qualifier the night after KOTR.

I’ve just watched that bulk of tapings from Monday Night Raw and Vince and co. must have been confident that Warrior would be coming back given that they could have absolutely buried Warrior during the commentary but they did not

Couple of things, has it ever been disclosed what the original plan was for the 6 man tag? I am thinking the Warrior beat down would write him off TV, making it a 2 on 3 handicap match only for Warrior to save the day with a run on the PPV… although that would kind of make it akin to the Bash At The Beach main event a few weeks earlier.

As those bulk tapings were all filmed on the same night, did they shoot Sid turning up in the car park and the scuffle in the parking lot that followed at a later date? splicing the footage of Shawn coming through the curtain after the Shawn and Billy Gunn match in post?

I’m not entirely sure there was time to make much of a plan or that the “suspension” stuff was as last minute shuffling as it played out. Those three Florida house shows he missed were the last two days of May and the 1st of June, and the Raw taping the night after KOTR and the next nights Superstars taping in LaCrosse (he beat Vader dark) were the last two dates they made Warrior fulfill, even though the “suspension” story didn’t air for another two weeks on the 8th July Raw. The only other involvement of Jim they filmed at Raw but didn’t use was Vince conducting an in-ring interview with Camp Cornette after which Warrior, Shawn and Ahmed confronted them. I think Vince may already have decided he might have to can Warrior and they just threw together a creative way to write him out but was hedging his bets in case they could settle the matter. Timing wise, it brings me onto your second question - they already had Sid subbing in on house shows by 29th, just 5 days after LaCrosse but still 9 days before he’d be reintroduced on telly. I think it’s not entirely impossible they might have brought Sid to the Raw taping and filmed the car park “ambush” knowing he was pencilled in to replace Warrior. And that would have been fun, the two of them in the same building again, four years on from “If he no sells my powerbomb, I quit.” Not impossible, though unlikely.
