I hate parsnips too, a long lasting hatred stemming from a school dinners occurance many years ago when the dinner lady assured me that they were roast potatoes - they were most certainly not. Turkey is also the shittest meat, edible but I would prefer any other meat I can think of apart from liver. I love most of the other stuff, sprouts, pate , Christmas pudding, I've been eating mince pies since September 2nd, cheese obviously, pork pie for breakfast Christmas morning, all the usual stuff like that is ace. I even discovered that eggnog is actually delicious last year after assuming it tasted like advocaat for years, my eldest made a few batches last Christmas and it's bloody lovely I've got a Clark Griswold style Moose Mug coming from Ali Express to drink it from (I ordered two months ago however the one I received was in the shape of a ladies bum, hopefully he second order will be Moose shaped) Quote

The carp isn't actually half bad (but is full of bones). I despise mayonnaise, however, so usually have my fish with boiled potatoes or mash. It doesn't quite hit the spot like chicken/lamb/turkey, roasties, carrots, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings, gravy, parsnips, pigs in blankets... Quote

Nothing more disappointing than the denial of roast potato. Then of all the berries cran would be my least favourite so I don't have that. Apart from that bring it on, mince pie with ice cream is a delight that all you pie deniers are missing. Someone on here once suggested sliced Christmas pudding fried in butter. I don't remember who it was but I thank them yearly. How my cholesterol is only 3.1 is a medical mystery. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted December 10, 2024 Members Posted December 10, 2024 Parsnips are absolutely fine but people have them just for the sake of it and tradition etc (CAULIFLOWER IS TRADITIONAL!) and no meal has ever been enhanced by parsnips. You might as well use the tray for another load of roast potatoes. Quote

Puts all our little complaints in perspective doesn't it! Edit to say - had some miso sprouts yesterday and they were really nice. I am not against sprouts, but equally I wouldn't miss them if they weren't there. Same with parsnips, but the kids really like parsnips and any veggies they will eat happily is a win in my book. There are other, nice traditional Christmas treats and drinks, but the meal on Christmas day is pretty dire. Incidentally, they eat it and give presents on the 24th. It's also a massive faff to basically trick the kids into thinking that Jezisek (little baby Jesus) brought the fucking presents while they were eating their carp. It involves distraction and somehow having a bell ring. A real team effort. I hate it. I swear, if the prices weren't always so ridiculous I'd be bringing the family back to the UK for the holidays... Quote

We always have sticky toffee pudding on Christmas It was always a trifle growing up, but since I've had kids of my own it's usually a chocolate log (AND LATER ON THE BOG MY OWN etc), toffee pudding or cheesecake. In fact now I'm sort of questioning where I would've had Christmas cake, probably a great grandparents, where all the food was always awful. Quote
