Vice City was the highpoint for me. I adored that game. Took everything that was good about GTA 3 and expanded on it brilliantly. Probably about time I start another play through.

I really liked 4 too despite thinking the driving mechanics were poor.

Could never get on with San Andreas strangely - I think it came along when I was a young greebo who close-mindedly refused to engage with anything hip-hop/LA-gangster adjacent, and I've never gone back to it.

I defo feel like the escapism element works better when you are escaping to a world different to the one that we are currently living in.
I cant be bothered to use social media or fill-up my car with petrol in real life, so adding chores into the game isn't really too tantalizing to me.

The first time riding north out of Los Santos and just not stopping - until the city noise and lights gave way to woodland - was absolutely incredible on a PS2 in 2004. 

I think time has been very kind to IV. It got a bit of "This is too serious" backlash after a few months in 2008 which games like the terrific Saints Row 2 capitalised on, but in retrospect it's such a singular, totally distinct mood piece within the series. 

III is still my favourite. The washed out, drum and bass, industrial dread of the whole thing is unmatched.

The betting shops in San Andreas and The X Games on Channel 5 are 100% responsible for me staying up all night and getting kicked out of college. Simpler times.
