The many sins of Cody Rhodes

I think Cody's digs at WWE are worse because being blunt he never came across as being able to cut it at as a top guy in company.

At least with Mox and Miro for example they both clearly had something about them that made them look a big deal where as Cody always came across as a dependable mid to upper mid card guy who can carry an ok gimmick.

Ogogo and QT proved that Cody is only as good in big matches as his opponents.

Take away the stars and the bells and whistles and he's still Dashing Cody Rhodes.

Yeah. Or even knocking on the door. When he wrestled Orton for the Intercontinental title it felt like Orton slumming it dropping down to his level and/or desperate as opposed to Cody stepping up. He wouldn’t even be a losing challenge to a World title (Chambers aside) never mind viable for winning one and when he left he’d virtually completed a bell curve for value on the card. It’s hardly Jericho in 1999 where fans of both promotions were scratching their heads that one company hadn’t realised what they had and you thought he might reach his potential for the other. Cody has exceeded where his potential might have gotten him to organically because he’s virtually been able to book himself to. Any wonder people are sick of him?

Whenever Cody wins a match it always feels like he's won it because of backstage influence rather than him being a good wrestler or his character deserving to win. Because of this it's basically impossible to get into any of his feuds now.

There’s also the fact there’s no consequence to any of his victories. If he wins, he can’t challenge for the title so there’s no destination to look forward to. Every win is a big ‘so what?’

I think they missed a trick by not having Cody kneel to Black to end their feud, resulting in the two teaming up for a bit. It might actually have resulted in Cody getting cheered, and the two of them challenging Penta and Fenix for the tag belts would have been great fun.

One of the big irritants to me concerning Cody is his entrance, it's too PPV for TV. If they cut out the lights out, the instrumentals and voiceover and just went straight into 'Kingdom' for TV appearances and saved the theatrics for PPV matches he would get far better reactions, having him come out the same tunnel as Arn would help too

They only way that "never challenging for the world title" thing should have paid off was that they stuck the belt on MJF while they were feuding and he spends some time gloating that he was everything Cody wanted to be, but Cody can never be there because of MJF's actions. Then we have Cody in a deep depression, begging for one shot, a single chance, a match with MJF where if he manages to win he can have a title shot, he's willing to put his career on the line, or MJF makes him go through a Gauntlet match, or something like the Kofi build to his title win.

Having said that it's not even like people could have begrudge him being world champion and an EVP, look at Omega's run as champion. It was built to well, played into the longer storyline, mind you Kenny Omega isn't the same person than managed to win the tag team titles from himself in his former company, is he? He stays well away from bollocks like that.

Instead I think he put the stipulation there to get people thinking "well he has to win, right? That's why he's done the stipulation?" and he lost, then it went nowhere afterwards. He didn't think of how this whole thing pays off, it just meanders into another "best friend betrays babyface, babyface looks stupid but gets his win back in the end" storyline and then Cody becomes the TNT champion instead. Plus it gives him an out when people realise he is mediocre at best. He's not "moving any needles", at least not in the right direction.

It felt a bit like when Bischoff brought back the big gold belt for Tripper because the WWE title went to Smackdown and he didn't want to work Tuesdays.

The bollocks with the sledgehammer and the golden shovel on Dynamite this week was that as well. Why is he wrestling in his gear, when Andrade is in "Street clothes" and Taz is trying to cover for it saying the likes of "oh, that stuff that looks like flame retardant gel on his back must be a load of pritt stick from when he fell into that bin earlier." to try and dig him out. Just wear a t-shirt.

He obviously palms a chair shot, but still does a blade job afterwards. Why didn't he blade early doors when he got dropped on the upturned ringsteps? As Pat said, he wants his matches to have moments, but the only moments they've had recently are when they threw his weight belt back into the ring last week, and tried to get whoever caught it this week to do the same.

The fact that he took a flaming table bump and still got what could at best be described as a lukewarm reception for winning the match says it all, really.

Brandi doesn't help. He needs to either embrace the heel stuff, at which point people will likely start cheering him, or go away and stick to his office job.

That's as bad and cringe worthy as WWE leaning into the whole 'co-exist' shtick. Are AEW now printing their own stuff or still using Pro Wrestling Tee's? Unsure if they moved away after the data breach stuff.

Bigger companies than PWT have had data breaches, don’t see why they would move away from that deal for that
