Minor Annoyances (Vol 2)

On podcasts, I know it’s because YouTube is the biggest platform blah blah but I hate how every podcast feels they have to do video now. I don’t want to watch it! I want stuff in my ears while I’m on the train or driving or doing the hoovering or the food shop! I’m never going to want to watch it!

You’re Dead To Me used to be one of my favourites, but it’s dropped off a cliff quality wise since they started doing it as a video, it feels so much less free and conversational now they all know they’re being filmed. I tried watching a few minutes of one and it’s just painfully awkward watching them sitting wondering when they can next say something or reading their notes off an iPad.

Do you still listen to the Pilot TV podcast? I finally binned that off earlier this month as they’d gone the same way. They didn't mention the Youtube channel that much, in fairness, but it was still enough to disrupt the flow of the show (I was also fed up of their flip-flopping opinions and wasn't a fan of Steph Seelan's contributions, but that's another conversation).

I’m trying to, but keep falling further and further behind and it feels like a bit of an obligation now. Their move to video didn’t feel like it affected things too much, but that’s around the point where I really started struggling to keep up, so perhaps it did.

I like Steph, but you’re totally right on the flip-flopping - it feels like that’s stepped up a lot recently, as have a lot of the other traits that annoy me. Boyd’s media-luvvie tendencies reached a peak when he was the only person in the world to call Alley Cats a work of genius, and the amount of stuff James won’t watch because it’s comedy / animated / episodic / unscripted is almost at the point of parody.

My top annoyance at the moment is how many times every episode something is described as “absolutely brilliant”. Every fucking thing is “absolutely brilliant” and I think even they’re aware of how often they say it because they usually try and speed through the phrase so all you hear is “abseybriant abseybriant abseybriant”.

I should probably stop listening shouldn’t I. I’ll certainly never ever ever watch it.

The only podcast I watch is the It's Always Sunny one, as I get so much more out of it that way, but then 90% of the joy I get from it is the facial expressions of Glenn Howerton.

Having said that, it's only the first few that were audio only, and I think they always had it in their mind for it to be a video podcast so that helps, as there isn't a massive catalogue behind it.

My favourite thing in the world is the World Football Phone In and I can't think of anything worse than watching it. Not every podcast needs to be a video, but then not every podcast should exist to be honest :)

Agreed with pretty much all of this. I could take them flip-flopping on Widows Bay but then they did it to around another five shows in the space of about three weeks, and I just thought what’s the point of listening to them for TV recommendations if they're going to disregard their own reviews a few weeks later.

It was the Boyd Alley Cats review that was the beginning of the end for me, just a load of 'isn't Ricky great?' bollocks.

I'll probably go back to them at some point as I did enjoy listening for the most part, but I did a massive podcast cull earlier this month and they were an unfortunate victim. Empire got the chop too as I've finally had my fill of Chris Hewitt's awful jokes, the ads were too frequent and too long and the move to Empire+ wasn't value for money for me.

A few of the podcasts I listen to/subscribe to on Patreon have video that I prefer to watch rather than listen. I like to have them on while working and I can also glance over at times or when I stop for a few minutes. And some formats work with best video I feel.

I knew the Alley Cats stuff was coming - there’s no way they weren’t going to gush over Gervais because he’s mates with Boyd - but I did think it was interesting they covered it on a week where the one person who might have called him out as being problematic wasn’t on the show. Ricky is not great. He never was if you ask me!

I still enjoy Empire, and have kept up to date with them. If I’ve got a parasocial relationship with any podcast it’s them so I don’t think I could ever give them up! I already subscribed to the spoiler specials so the Empire+ move was no hardship for me either. I do wish they weren’t so completely London centric though, I get it’s the centre of the known world but not every event has to be there please. (I also like that, for the most part, they’ve split the interviews into their own separate show, having realised that most listeners must skip past them. I definitely do.)

These things:

It’s impossible to know whether you need to push them ten times to get a little dribble of hand wash that invariably ends up on the container or whether you have to go to the other side of the bathroom, stand like Mark Boucher and await a rocket of soap that flies at you like a male porn star’s release after a month off work.

The only ones that are even vaguely useful are the Dyson ones, and the ones that try to rip off the Dyson ones. I much prefer paper towels. When I worked in Stockport they used to have those ones that were like a long proper towel on a roll. I get why they'd phase them out though as they'd likely be far from hygienic.

On a similar note, are there many more minor annoyances than hand dryers in a public bog that don't work?

The emphysemic's breath. Your company is being asked to make a product that does one thing, and you produce something completely incapable of doing it.
