Best crisps?

Lidl are doing an Asian theme this week and have added a bunch of crisps they don't normally stock on these theme weeks. I spotted about 5 variety's of Calbee and the Buldak spicy crisps. Prices were around £1.70 so more inline with Asian supermarkets and not rip off online places.

 

I am trying my hardest atm to not eat the whole of a bag of these in one sitting.

Calbee crisps are great. Any time I go to the Asian Supermarket I grab a bag of the eel ones. Last time I got a honey grilled chicken and they were spot on, and actually tasted like they should and not just crap roast chicken flavour. The other ones are nik-nak style, never seen those twisty ones!

Edit: I did see the spicy pizza flavour there as well but never bought any as they sounded a bit risky. If they're in Lidl I might grab a pack though.

I can't remember, I eat a lot of crisps

But I've enjoyed Calbee any time I've had them.

I was mistaken they aren't the Buldak crisps they are these things.

 

 

They are very nice too. They are not crazy hot but have a bit of a chilli kick and taste great.

They’re so new that I can’t find a picture of them online to go with this post, but the Aldi Limited Edition Black Truffle crisps are nothing short of remarkable. I’m pretty sure they’re a festive product, so stock up while you can. I love truffle flavour, and up until now, the benchmark for truffle crisps was the Torres variety. This equals those. They’re reasonably priced, the crisp itself is thin and tasty, with a perfect amount of flavour to them - they’re just wonderful and I can’t recommend them enough. These are by far the best crisps Aldi has ever produced. Spectacular stuff.

That's good to know - I love Torres' crisps, but they're so bloody expensive. A genuine alternative that's cheaper is always welcome.

Tried some more Bret's flavours recently:

These are disturbingly moreish. The mustard flavour really comes through, but the subtle honey flavour really balances it out.

These are good, and the flavour is excellent - you get that nutty hard cheese taste coming through. HOWEVER! For what you actually get, I'm not sure they're worth the extra money. They're a bit above your regular cheese flavour crisps, but not that above.

If I had to choose these versus Torres, I’d go with the Aldi crisps; with the cheaper price in mind. The Torres crisps are probably still better, but the difference in taste is so marginal that it’s not even worth considering.

I’ve been looking out for Bret’s crisps ever since you started posting about them, by the way! Has anyone seen them for sale in Scotland, and if so, where?

I've always been disappointed every time I've had Torres crisps. Really oily and not much flavour on them at all.

Close enough to crisps? But these are surprisingly really nice, the flavour is far more subtle than you'd imagine, there's the sweetness and a little tiny hit of spice right at the back.

Flavoured crisps had been around since the 50s (cheese & onion first).

That video is a That's Life segment about the rise of "exotic" flavours - you'll notice how the taste testers reference traditional flavours like salt & vinegar and the aforementioned cheese & onion in trying to figure out what they are tasting.

I tried these today. They were OK. Strong cheese flavour with an after-tang to them. Wouldn't say pizza but I get what they were going for.

Marks & Sparks have their own black truffle crisps for Christmas, only had a handful so far but they're a little more subtle than I imagined but they're a great quality crisp. I'll try and grab the Aldi version next to compare.
