MoKonjic
I cannot begin to describe my hatred for "Surprise, Surprise". Seriously a depressing a moment having that on the TV while waiting for my Mum to overcook a Goodfellas pizza. Â Now prestened by Holly Willoughby! The plot thickens. Paid Members Maverick Posted November 13, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 13, 2014 Not to derail here but what do people think about Chubby Brown, I interviewed him a few weeks back and he seemed a nice enough bloke (to me in the context of the interview I mean), when I asked him about the material he made some very good points but spoiled it a little by going off on one about the EU. Â He also made the point that Chubby is a character and one that entertains thousands every year, his standup shows sell out regularly across the UK still and his DVDs sell in the 10,000+ region every year. Â When I asked about the racist, sexist material he said that things like immigration, feminism etc are things that are talked about rightly or wrongly every day by many people in the U.K and that's where he draws his material from and writes it for the ordinary people. Â Either way he's definately alot smarter than his "you fat bastard" persona suggests.
Moderators neil Posted November 13, 2014 Moderators Share Posted November 13, 2014 Just being reminded about Surprise, Surprise (and it's fucking annoying theme tune) has sent me into a rage. ITV was top stuff during the middle of the day in the 90's, you had a nice combo of Airwolf, Knight Rider, Gladiators, then it would just turn into the most depressing shit. "Surprise, Surprise", Blind Date, and fucking Barrymore. Just awful stuff.
Moderators Astro Hollywood Posted November 13, 2014 Moderators Share Posted November 13, 2014 While Chubby Brown is a character, in that he doesn't walk around his regular life in flying goggles, gurning, the real Chubby is still racist and sexist. He might not sing a song about baggy aul' fannies to the bloke behind the counter when he's paying for his petrol, but there's not a huge amount of distance there. Â Have there ever been outright racist stand-up characters portrayed by comedians with completely opposite views? Off the top of my head, Al Murray's the only one coming to mind, and the fact he stuck with that for long, long after it was clear he'd been co-opted by actual racists makes me uneasy. Â Joke answer: Ricky Gervais. Joke answer because he's racist for reals.
Loki
Jo Brand's not having a negative impact on society, she's just fucking lazy, like any comic whose routine is entirely based around their minority status. See also: putting on the patois voice of an old Jamaican aunt.   "Astrooo...  put down dat rasclart idiat keybaaah and com in cheaaa, ya hear mer naa.  We'm gat dat chicken and raise now ya knooo, faaar ya teeee.  Lard me boii, when you get den ting ere, ya no seee  an woooman in tirty year...." King Coconut
Yes, the culture is already there but it does nothing about redressing the balance, it enforces it and that is what people see as problematic. Chubby brown et al aren't given a TV platform and again, that's the issue. This guy was. As I said, people aren't trying to silence Dapper Laughs, they think a national broadcaster shouldn't be giving him a platform. I don't think it has anything to do with dictating what people can and can't find funny. Â I think that point is getting lost, to be honest. Not you, as you state your case well, but it's like fucknuggets who think the show being pulled is a freedom of speech issue, the sort who can't tell the difference between freedom of speech and not having a platform. I see your point, I really do, but where do you draw the line? Jimmy Carr has joked about sex with a minor on terrestrial TV. I don't know of anything this dapper chap has said that is worse. The only difference is dapper's audience, to which we don't belong. It's not our place to decide what other audiences should be watching simply because we believe they're too stupid to separate real life from fantasy. Even if it's true. Â I say all this with a heavy heart too, because I understand the dangers of it, but my freedom to decide for myself is so important to me that I wouldn't dream of taking it from anyone else simply because I disagree with their decision. Loki
You have to draw the line somewhere though KC, right? Otherwise everything is ok - as long as there's an audience. I suppose to some extent that's true, in that Roy Chubby Brown is still touring doing jokes about Pakis and poofs. He's not getting on telly though. Paid Members FLips Posted November 13, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 13, 2014 In comedy, women are certainly a minority. And no, it isn't because they aren't funny. Probably doesn't help though.
Keith Houchen
The difference between Frankie Boyle, Jimmy Carr and Dapper Laughs,mf or me at least, is Carr and Boyle may tell the odd joke that may overstep the TV line. They are usually edited out or highlighted individually, such as Boyle's Queen's haunted pussy or Carr's Oscar Pistorius disabled toilet joke. But they have other material, Dapper Laughs is a one trick pony, that's his whole thing. You can't edit out the jokes you don't like as that is all he has. Carr and Boyle have versatility, well more than DL. Â I should point out that I don't consider myself to be above his fans, it's not snobbery. As I've said repeatedly, it's not about trying to stop people watching him, they can do that whenever they like. I'm sure that an element of his fans are well aware of the misogyny and applaud it, as they don't want their privilege in life challenged, whether it be from women, blacks, gays or the disabled. Sphinx
Frankly, I think if we're going to go on about perpetuating a rape mindset, I think there should be heavier criticism of the lyrics and personas of mainstream music stars. But they're wealthier and more popular than Dapper Laughs. Of course there was a storm about Blurred Lines but I can't think of many more songs that have been pulled up on it. Some Eminem songs too I suppose. Or the ability to consume porn 24/7 in an instant. Anyone with a sane mind should be able to know the difference, but that's also the case with Dapper Laughs.  Those people who were wolfwhistling girls before are now shouting 'oi oi! She knows!' He's an easy target.  He's not a saint of course. His character should have been more obviously a pisstake. When he's doing these lines and is being put in a positive light rather than a fool like Jay from Inbetweeners for example, it can be seen as more influential. Not to mention some of his Vines have been some right pap quality wise (the wheelie bin one springs to mind). But I can't shake that he's new, naïve, and it's easy to rip him down and blame him and do the whole 'quote line in serious, condescending voice' shit. I don't disagree that he's a victim of his own success, though it's harder to feel sorry for him in that bloody turtleneck. Undefeated Steak
Sphinx, tell me one successful musician whose entire character is that of a misogynist or whose lyrics are solely degrading to one class, gender or race.
MoKonjic
Dapper Laughs jokes are not solely degrading to one class, gender or race (although he did one about a black guy called Jhimel and a banana, I'm surprised that one didn't pop up on Newsnight)
Sphinx
That's where the character needs to be better defined and he needs to show his arse more (not like he literally did in one of his Vines). Â But some of the most popular musicians for decades have had misogynistic lyrics and themes, becoming more explicit with time. Also a ton of music videos are and many are shown on daytime TV. They've had a slightly bigger reach than Dapper Laughs. They've also been popular with men and women alike.
Paid Members Fox Piss Posted November 13, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted November 13, 2014 Didn't Pitbull get that aimed at him recently? Calvin Harris new song ask girls to "Show how big their mouth is" and i'm sure it got played in chart rundown. Not saying Harris music is generally of that nature.Stupid comment aside. Overreaction comes to mind with it all.
