A Field In England.

There will come a time when I will stop saying to myself "I know you've given him chance after chance, but you might like this Ben Wheatley film", I wish it was earlier today.

A sixth form student version of Valhalla Rising, with added preposterousness.  Utter fucking garbage and no, it isn't better than Mother! before you start with that shit.

Mrs Loki and I thought someone on Channel 4 was pulling an elaborate prank when A Field In England was first released.   It felt like a terribly misjudged pisstake or something.

I'll put my hand up though and say I absolutely loved High Rise.  Thought it was visually brilliant, and a clever take on difficult source material.   It doesn't make up for how bad most of his other work is though.  Perhaps he's best off sticking to directing Dr Who.

Saw 3D.

I thought it was pretty good if you can get past some leaps in logic and subpar acting which are common in the genre. It has an interesting meta narrative, and Sean Patrick Flanery is good in the lead role. People complained about killing off Jigsaw in the third movie but then people complain about him not being used adequately in this movie. I can't speak for 4, 5 and 6 but this one didn't have an overreliance on him, which is a good thing - as he is supposed to be dead several movies at this point. The ending brought things full circle in a decent way for the movie that was supposed to end the franchise. Still... people will bitch.

I'd probably put this one second in the ones I've seen behind Saw and ahead of Saw 2, Jigsaw and Saw 3 but I need to watch 2 and 3 again. I just recall being distinctly underwhelmed when I seen 3 in the cinema.

"Saw" films go too far for me. I like a bit of good horror but not the right visceral stuff right in your face that looks 100% real. "Hostel" films too. I've had "A Serbian Film" on my "To Watch" pile for about three years now.

P.S. I hate those Poundland horror films that imitate the Islamic State\Al Qaeda beheadings trying to whup up a newspaper storm and get some publicity. Films can fuck off as well.

You know who was a great actor? Philip Seymour Hoffman. I miss him. He wasn't just great in serious roles either. He was hilarious in stuff like The Big Lebowski and Along Came Polly (introducing the word shart into the common vernacular).

I watched one of his last roles, A Most Wanted Man, at the cinema, shortly before he died, and I remember thinking that he was on his way to becoming one of the true greats like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Just 46. :(

I agree with you about the Saw (and Hostile) franchises going too far.

I watched Jigsaw at the cinema and now I'm watching them in descending order.

Saw 7 and Jigsaw were tolerable in terms of gore for me, especially the latter.

I'm 6 minutes in to Saw 6 and I'm reminded why it's a test of endurance to get through these movies. That opening scene will haunt my dreams.

Anyways, I'll persevere because I genuinely think the writing is clever and they have more to them than the average horror movie. I'm intrigued to find out how Detective Hoffman becomes a disciple of Jigsaw and how Jigsaw's wife comes into play.

* I know it's weird watching in descending order but I already watched the first three in ascending order ages ago and couldn't be arsed watching all of them before Jigsaw was out of theaters.

I don't really see how the Saw films "go too far". They're just gory torture porn shite like a million others. They're only cleverly written if you're Mike Castle. The first one was tolerable if you can somehow stand Cary Elwes' alleged acting but after that they're complete shit.

Went to see The Commuter, it was alright. Pretty much what you'd expect, no surprises at all, but completely wastes Vera Farmiga who really should be doing better than this and The Conjuring films.

Speaking of which, I enjoyed her in Source Code, which I watched the other day.  It's a decent enough film, Jeffrey Wright was his usual brilliance.

Speaking of Brilliance, Nocturnal Animals was last night's viewing.  Michael Shannon is such a wonderful actor, glad he got a pay cheque film with that spandex and cape bollocks he was in and can stick to wonderful performances like this.  He is one of those who I'd watch a film if he was in it, regardless of anything else.

Not a spoiler, but it was only afterwards I realised that in the "Book" scenes, the Amy Adams character wasn't played by Amy Adams, but Isla Fisher!

She's great. Her sister Taissa is dead good as well, she was great in The Final Girls, which is also awesome.

On Michael Shannon, I'm assuming you've all seen Take Shelter because that's him at his best right there.
