DVDs and Films You Have Watched Recently 3 - The Final Insult

I tried watching The Master on New Years Day.   It goes onto the very short list of films that I've given up watching, in this instance about 40 minutes in.

I'm not against slow paced films, or long films, or arty films, but they have to have some sort of compelling protagonist and some sort of story, you know?  I loved Andrei Rublev or Solaris, I was a big fan of Meek's Crossing, I even really enjoyed Valhalla Rising.

The Master though... simply bored me, and I found the music jarring and not in a good way.  Thomas Paul Anderson either makes films I really love, or really take a dislike to, there seems to be no middle ground.

Needless to say, I watched Die Hard 2 instead and enjoyed it immensely.

Yeah, The Master was proper underwhelming. I didn't mind Inherent Vice, not a patch on his best work, like, but thought it was entertaining enough.

Anyway, being off work I've made a few trips to the cinema over the past couple of weeks.

First up, Jumanji 2. I discussed in here that I was quite excited to see it due to the brilliant trailer and the fine squabbling siblings act The Rock and Kevin Hart have perfected on their promotional tours. The film itself is a good time. Some genuine laughs from all the cast; everyone is very good. Impossible not to fall a bit in love with Karen Gillan.

Someone suggested Molly's Game. I went in not really knowing anything about it, other than it's running time is 140 minutes, which made me wince. You need to be bloody good to not make anything over 2 hours drag, in the cinema, IMO. Thankfully, the film is bloody good. It quite clearly pinches / heavily inspired by Scorsese's direction in Casino, which is fair enough because that decision makes the opening great fun. The entire running time absolutely flew by.
Jessica Chastain deserves every plaudit that's coming her way, because she's very good in this. Takes you about the entire length to adjust to how pretty she is too.
A couple of criticisms include Idris Elba's wonky accent that falls apart when he's given scenes to chew up, and some of the dialogue and character work. In particular, the parts where they show Chastain's character do some dumb things, then immediately cut to bits where she's read a couple of book and degrees, because she's proper smart - at the end my inner voice was screaming "WE GOT IT".

Finally, On Body and Soul. A weird love story. I liked parts of it, but some parts were a bit too cute for my taste. However, the final 10/15 minutes are undeniable. Maybe not as great as I was led to believe, but a good movie. The two leads in at are very good.

Yes, she's rather attractive, isn't she.

Went to see it a second time on Tuesday and the whole cake thing still made me laugh my arse off. The stupidest gag in the whole thing but also the funniest.

It's proving to be a big box office hit as well so you'd imagine there will be a sequel although I'm not sure how they'd do it.

I’m a huge fan of the original Jumanji and even though I curled my lip at the idea of a remake/rebook, I now feel the sequel surpassed its predecessor completely. It was so, so enjoyable and one of those flicks that make you say “This is what going to the pictures is all about! This and that cheese sauce stain that you find on your chin and the collar of your t-shirt three hours later.”

If I was a younger man again, I assure you that Karen Gillan would have had nations...continents full of potential populace emptied into the toilet pot/sock/crease in the sofa or bed/my abdomen. She is absolutely stunning. But I’m trying to focus on growing up, now that I’m two years away from 40. So any release these days is just for duty’s sake.

Leather is very handy to clean though, C-Bol.

It all - all of this - started with me ma and da going down the pub of a Sunday, and one Sunday in particular had Joely Richardson running around in the nip in Lady Chatterly on BBC. I'd never seen anything like it, and the gap in the sofa cusions made sense.

Sure, I still get caned over jockeying sofas. One of my mates posted an Ikea brochure to my gaff on my birthday last year with a note that said "Better than Xhamster". The missus was stumped and I had to say "Ah it's just a joke coz you made me put up all them flatpacks in the summer and I was just moaning at them about it..."

I just saw a preview of Darkest Hour. I’ve been eager to see this since it was announced and it did not disappoint. It was absolutely superb. It might not be for everyone as it’s a very slow-burning plot but I loved it. Gary Oldman is outstanding and if he doesn’t get an Oscar nod then there’s something wrong somewhere. He’s a chameleon and he is faultless as Churchill. The performances around him were great too. By the end of it I was ready to fight some Nazis!

The Disaster Artist is quite good. Pretty funny and James Franco is eerily spot on. I imagine if you're a bigger Room geek you'll get more of a kick out of it.

I, Tonya is another that is very much in the Goodfellas story-telling mold. It's very entertaining, but it's flippant nature sinks a lot of the more hefty moral points in the film (such as domestic violence), which is maybe me asking for too much. Margot Robbie () and Allison Janney are bloody excellent throughout - the mother/daughter relationship is one of the films strong points and both do a great job with it.

Allison Janney is one of those actors who is always good, no matter how small the role and bad the film. Problem is that she rarely gets anything substantial to do, so I'm glad to hear she has one of her bigger roles in that.

Speaking of Franco, I watched something called The Vault which was pretty bad.  Without spoiling it, there was a bit at the end that I think was meant to be a swerve but I thought we all knew it all along as it was so bleeding obvious.  A real "Oh, were we not meant to have known that" moment.
