With Linda running for Senate there's no way this is an angle. The negative publicity they would receive would completely fuck her over and give her opposition further ammo to use against her. You bell.

Ā

Oh my god, you're such a smark! You honestly believe that's why the product is PG? Yeah, sure it's not the multi-million dollar franchise agreements they have with toy companies that flat out refuse to do business with the WWE if the product isn't child friendly - it's the senatorial campaign of Linda McMahon.

Ā

How about the fact that the PG era predates Linda McMahon's senatorial race?

Ā

Or the fact that her opponents have routinely used previous WWE storylines as fodder for their anti-Linda advertising anyway? The campaign's only response to such onslaughts is to defend the presentation of characters such as Eugene, rather than dismiss them as mistakes of the past. Do you think in politics that whatever anyone has done up until the point they declare themselves as a political candidate means nothing?

Ā

The evidence for adult-themed politically incorrect material supported for Linda McMahon for decades is too strong to not be involved in her campaign. You really think whether it happened in 2002 or 2012 makes any difference to how it will be used against her by her opponents? Get real!

Ā

Where did he mention anything about PG? Previous offences can be used to damage an opponent, but things happening during the campaign will always be far more scandalous, and damaging, hence why a faked heart attack on national television, presented as being a real incident, is incredibly unlikely. It's a potential PR nightmare.

People have been unable to separate what is real and what is acting in wrestling for decades. Everyone who watches will have been a "fucking idiot" at some point and some still are.

Ā

Some of those people have been the wrestlers themselves. Look at Flair, he's played The Nature Boy for so long he doesn't know how to be anyone else.

Ā

Back on topic though. Lets accept for one second that KOK is right and this is all just an angle. What purpose does it serve? A quick spike in ratings in a month's time when Jerry comes back?

It would be weird if it was an angle. It would mean Cole is effectively just going on TV and saying something he knows is untrue and doesn't believe, solely so that he can provoke other people into reacting, almost as if he was desperate for attention. What kind of person would do that?

It would be the perfect setup to the Vince-directed version of The Wrestler that I bet he's dying (excuse the pun) to do.

Ā

Lawler retires tearfully on Raw, leaves WWE. CM Punk belittles him for retiring, calling him an old man, coward, whatever.

Ā

A few month later, WWE catches up with Lawler, who's working selling cars or something, some job that's a little bit sad. Punk again mocks him, but Lawler stays retired.

Ā

Punk continues a long-term campaign of making fun of Lawler, and then a few months before Mania, Jerry returns for something (Hall Of Fame induction of someone) and has an on-screen confrontation with Punk, leading to Lawler angrily agreeing to come out of retirement for one last match, against Punk, at Wrestlemania. Everyone tells Lawler he's crazy, could die, but he insists.

Ā

It's the Rocky story, crossed with The Wrestler. It would be amazing. But it's way, way too dangerous to actually DO, as what if (as has happened) Lawler REALLY has a heart attack?

Ignoring the troll and people's attempt to look cool by knocking an easy target, the Cole thing does seem to suggest I was wrong to speculate regarding whether Lawler receives any health checks or not. I'd rather assumed that as he's probably not contracted as a regular wrestler that it wouldn't be considered much of a priority to insist on health checks but Cole's comments suggest he's still tested. Although his argument that Lawler wrestles so many dates so it's unlikely the wrestling that gave him a heart attack seem somewhat illogical, because that leads to a suggestion of regular stress on the heart. It does seem more and more like it's just one of those things though. Although I still think that it's one of those moments where you kind of stand back and say "yeah, it does seem a little off that people of that age (or older) are wrestling".

Would the PPV fade to black with us deciding what actually happens? Seeing Cole in pieces at the announce table was really difficult to watch. Fuck knows how he didn't go to pieces

Michael Cole reported on stuff like the Oklahoma City bombings, 9 months on the ground during the Yugoslavian civil war and the Waco siege and all that. Michael Cole is a real pro. Probably WWE's biggest one when it comes to being behind the mic. Too much to go to pieces on camera anyway, even if it is a close friend.

Still think Vince McMahon wouldn't approve such an angle? Get real.

Nobody is saying that Vince wouldn't a heart attack angle, they saying this isn't one, but with that in mind he is unlikely to do such an angle under the current direction.

Point missed somewhat. The debate isn't WHY the product is PG, it's the fact that it is combined with Linda's run for senate means they would be unlikely to do such an angle right now. One more thing, did WWE not sell toys during the attitude era?
