Could I ask you a lot favour and discuss any twists or major spoilers in spoiler tags for this particular entry, just as a small gift to me? It would be much appreciated! I've been avoiding spoilers for bloody years, successfully.

Fight Club (1999)

People wot put it in 1st place: 2

IMDB Rating: 8.8

What's it about?

I don't know and I don't want to know because I've never seen it and I don't want it spoiled!

What do we say?

Like I say, not seen it, but I will be because David Fincher is bloody fantastic. I know some people that have, though, and they will be along shortly to let you know what they thought of it.

Just by way of statistical points of interest, though - Fight Club polled more votes than any other film on the list, and did in fact poll two more votes (11 in total) than the next nearest film, which happened to be Die Hard. Indeed, it was quite a lot lower down the list until a couple of late high-rating votes sent it this high.

So, you lot?

"Endlessly rewatchable. I've watched it countless times and upon every viewing always manage to notice some new quirk or piece of story or clue to what's to come later on which just makes me love it all the more each time it gets viewed." - ShortOrderCook

"Interesting twist, even more interesting performances." - Dingbat

"The pretentious GCSE media studies student choice, but I stand by it. It's totally held up over time, and Fight Club was the movie that got me in to 'proper' movies that challenged me, rather than whatever mainstream stuff was showing on TV at the time. It was my entry level into worthwhile cinema." - Astro Hollywood

Can't go wrong with a bit of Fincher. One of the things I love about his films are the awesome title sequences he does and Fight Club is no exception.

He also seems to alternate between making a good film followed by a really great one - so after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being good, the next one he does should hopefully be pretty special.

As great as Fight Club is (and it is incredible), arseholes have ruined it by quoting the shit out of it, like it's funny because they did a quote - "First rule of Fight Club...", in particular. This has kind of spoiled it for me, in recent years.

My girlfriend's housemates are massive abusers of this, and only the other day stamped a post-it note on their fridge with that quote, obviously because they are hip and radical. Although, I will admit to once owning a t-shirt saying "The first rule of computer club is you don't talk about computer club." Looking back, I really don't understand it that well.

Anyway, brilliant film with a brilliant cast. I wouldn't say it's dated badly at all, but I can see why people think it has, especially that core group of fans that, as Blackson mentioned, quote it so much that it loses any kind of impact. David Fincher really is brilliant.

What's the shelflife on spoilers though? I reckon at 13 years, if you haven't seen it yet, tough.

Which weirdly reminds me of Ewan McGregor, weeks before the release of Episode 1, bouncing up to a camera on the red carpet in Cannes or somewhere, and gleefully saying "It's shit!" with a big grin before strolling on.

He was not wrong.

Forever.

Unless people start watching every movie and TV show and read every book on the day they come out. And also manage to catch up with everything that's ever been released up to the point they started.

I really didn't enjoy Fight Club at all, It was a situation where I had loads of people tell me I'd love it and when I finally saw it I was disappointed, I hated the twist too.

I think I'll revisit it soon because I must not have been in the right headspace or something when I saw it, it does seem like I should enjoy it more than I did.

Ed Norton's great.

When I saw Fight Club it was in the cinema on a Sunday afternoon, because my mate was working there at the time and he got free tickets. The entire screen was empty apart form myself and my mate. The projectionist came down to call him a cock, because they wouldn't have even bothered showing it if no one was in the screen. We both walked out of it with massive grins on our faces having just seen a great film. I think it does help with certain films if they've not been hyped up though, sort of discovering a film by going into the local vid shop or just picking something to watch at the cinema at random is always good when you find a gem of a film.

I really don't like Fight Club. In fact I was toying with putting it in my worst films list, not because it's quite that bad, but more because it's loved so much and I just don't get the love for it. Just as I don't get Anchorman, and hope to god it isn't still to come in this list. Number 1 and 2 should be Rocky killing the Russian and The Shawshank Redemption, based on not already appearing, but I have a funny feeling they won't appear at all. :(

Edit: I just flicked up the Sky Movies screen and see Forrest Gump on it, and can't believe I totally forgot about it when making my list. It would have got a top 5 place in my list if I hadn't totally forgot about it. Not sure that it would have mattered anyway.
