davertfnewman Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Batman: Caped Crusader season two debuted on Amazon today. Managed to watch the whole season over the course of the day, which isn't too difficult when you figure it's ten episodes lasting about twenty-five minutes each. I enjoyed the first season and did this one again. Some reasonably creepy moments and homages to pulp era stuff. They make some interesting choices with some new characters and I can recognise and understand why they made those choices. Spoiler The Riddler is like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and the Joker is more stoical and probably based off Conrad Veidt (an original influence) being German. Quote
RIDDUM_N_STYLE Posted July 31 Posted July 31 Booked my ticket for Spider-Man for tomorrow earlier and had the very rare surprise of seeing near sell outs on the two screenings I was deciding between. In the end I opted for a 2pm showing as they had an empty row free Haven’t experienced a full screening, especially on a Saturday, for a Marvel film since probably Endgame so looking forward to it Quote

It looks gorgeous as well. Some of those shots looked ripped from a page or cover of a comic. It also reminded me at times of the Insomniac series of games. I was disappointed to learn Wonder Man season 2 was cancelled and I hope it’s only because the director is being tapped to do more films. Quote

The positives: Spider-Man movies seem to always hit me emotionally in a way I don't entirely expect, and this one did as well. It's mainly, I think, that Peter is always trying to do the right thing, to the point of exhaustion and depression, but rarely gets to be sure that he's done the right thing - and his mistakes often hit badly. So the moments where he gets some aspect of being told he's a good guy... yeah, that hits for me. Zendaya. She's been generally amazing as MJ, but in this one - how is she able to be, y'know, Zendaya, and yet also come across as the most grounded and real person in the film? Everything I see her in, I think she's going to just be a bigger and bigger star. The rest of the cast. Yeah, everyone was great. Most of the SFX - there was a point while watching Disclosure Day and there was the whole big with the train, and I just felt completely distanced from it (despite a lot of it being practical). This, though - never had that. Not sure why. The negatives Some of the SFX - the mask, in particular. This was mostly when he was in the banya, but just... it didn't look like material. Some of the tie-ins. Yes, the videogame is great. The 'Crime in progress', trackers, fight scenes, car chases, etc, being direct from it felt a bit on the nose. Pete's product-placement phone too. All that just took me out of it at times. Some of the tech stuff. I know a bunch of the 'Peter talking to his tech' stuff is so you can second-screen it, but it felt like it was bordering on AI-Bro in a way it somehow didn't when Iron Man did it. It feels like it takes away from Scrappy-Peter-Parker and wandered into 'left to his own devices, he'd be in trouble'. Also, hoo-boy, our lad Peter got very comfortable with that facial-recognition software, didn't he? Including the hacking into public cameras stuff. This is the kind of thing in Dark Knight that was like 'this is crossing a line' and 18 years later, it feels a bit 'no big deal as long as a good guy does it'. Overall, as good as I think Marvel is capable of getting at the moment. Quote

Originally just on as nostalgic background viewing whilst we got the kids ready for bed, it really caught my six year old daughter’s imagination. Flashbacks to when I became obsessed with it at her age. Super cute. “What’s he doing now, Dad?” “He’s going to go live in the North Pole, where he turns from Clark Kent into Superman.” “…will he live with Santa?” However, I was very quickly reminded how different film and television was back then.
