Hearts seem like they're really struggling having been gutted over the summer, Champions League games were rubbish and even against Aberdeen today the spirit just seemed gone. 

Not relegation worthy by any means but definitely gonna struggle this year.

My 9 year son keeps telling people "my English team is Spurs". 

Despite neither me, his mother, or anyone we are related to, or even know having any affinity or connection to them whatsoever.

It seemed to start when Ange Postecoglou left Celtic to go there and I really hoped it was just a phase due to his love for AP and his football at Celtic however it's continued long past that now. 

I could live with an Everton, maybe even a Man City/Man Utd at a real push...but please...not Spurs.

Is there any advice I can get to help steer him away from a life long connection to mediocrity and disappointment? 😅

No, quite frankly. You're an idiot for allowing it, and you deserve everything you get. Him too. 

But it does build character, as I always tell my daughter, so there is that. That character being a manic depression that goes hand in hand with my general disdain for life. It's extremities but you get used to it.

So, when my son got into football at about 7ish, we told him to choose a team and there would be no pressure. As a family/friend group, were all Barnsley supporters first and foremost as it s our home town club, then we all have a soft spot for a Premier League team for our own reasons(we dont support them as such, but it makes the Premier League season more intresting between us, if that makes sense). Our families was Spurs, after I was taken to the '92 cup final because I was obsessed with Gazza! 

Anyway, because they were winning at the time, he decided Chelsea was his team(his choice). After a while however, he started to ask to go to Oakwell more, and ask about Spurs' history to the point he became a Barnsley supporter with a soft spot for the Lillywhites! When asking why he chose these, rather than doing what his mates were doing and switching to Man City, he said he'd rather support a club that has to fight and build over time, than one who can go out and buy the league. So, maybe your son has done the same thing*

*Talking spurs here, Barnsley are building nothing!

I'm too young to remember, but my father in-law still holds a grudge towards that dirty cunt. His words, not mine.

Yeah he absolutely brought it on himself, the first "tackle" on Garry Parker should've warranted a booking at the very least, but even then I don't think he'd have calmed down, he was possessed that day.

I am very much of the opinion that you can support whoever you like.

It's funny to imagine someone being asked why they Support spurs in about 15 years time though.

But look at it this way, if you started supporting us because of him, you only had to wait a year for a trophy.

Similarly, I support Spurs because I loved Gazza and Lineker at Italia 90 and that was it. I too only had to wait a year for a trophy, and thought "well we'll win one every year for sure"

We didn't.

To be fair I became a Celtic fan partly because my Dad was Rangers (half the extended family is Celtic, half is Rangers, blame Irish/Scottish Grandparents) as a bit of a windup to him and mainly because I loved Henrik Larsson's dreads. 

But I also hate Big Ange with an irrational passion so yeah that's a fun one to explain when you're older.

I am in a similar boat. My dad’s side all Celtic, mums side all rangers. 

I had a decision to make at a very young age and went with Celtic. This was early 90s when Celtic were winning nothing and not even really competing - literally not even coming second to Rangers at the time.

I went with Celtic anyway. We had a few season tickets in our family (one of them being my dads) at the time so I think my logic was probably ‘if I support Celtic, I can go to games!’

I think I made a good choice as I got to see a bit of Tommy Burns managerial days, the likes of Cadete, Van Hooijdonk and di Canio coming in, Wim Jansens team winning the league and bringing in Henrik Larson etc.

Importantly I got to go see Celtic v Man United in Paul McStays testimonial game. I was totally in love with United at the time mainly due to Eric Cantona. My uncle was living in Cheshire in those days and was a long time United fan and season ticket holder which I always thought was really cool. 
 

I still get a bit of stick from people about United to this day which I just find a bit weird. Usually Celtic / Rangers fans who are not from Glasgow telling me that I am not from Manchester.
