I think they're absolutely shit at what they do and objectively, they're disgusting, but I just have such a begrudging admiration for WWE's ability to take money off people for this garbage. The crowd for the show were incredible. Both in number and passion. It's insane to see these people completely buy WWE does lucha libre and love it.

So much so, that I'm fascinated to see what would happen if they took over NOAH or something and did WWE does strong style. It'd be garbage but it'd immediately become the number two promotion in Japan and be full of people in WWE shirts watching Giant Baba lose to Austin Theory or something.

The build up video for the match looked really nice but did a fucking dreadful job of building up what you were seeing. A right mess. WWE are the masters of packages like this but this one did nothing for the untrained. It absolutley hammered home what this promotion is though when it flicked through the history of rivalries and they were all WWF/WWE centric. No hiding from the fact this is a WWE C show with masks.

Enjoyed the match, to a point. The entrances were great. Crowd fucking loved it and made it worth watching. Gable's average. Kaiser is really fun. The ring work was still way too WWE to be that enjoyable. But it built some nice drama and delivered a great finish. The crowd absolutely made it.

There's probably going to be a load of backlash against it now as WWE seem to have gone all out promoting it as one of the best matches ever, so I want to get on record before that starts by saying this was a hell of a match that was my favourite of the year so far. It helped that Gable and Kaiser have been two of my favourite lower card guys in WWE, so to see them  have this super heated main event battle was really heart warming. All the "WWE style" tropes (in reality all things that have happened in many promotions for years) worked perfectly for the story they were telling, and they also had plenty of mask ripping, stiff ugly work and fire. It will be fascinating to see what they do with El Grande Americano going forward, and I look forward to Chad Gable returning.

Just wanted to point out that during my very brief foray into BritWres, my name was El Grande. I was told by pretty much all of my trainers it was a shite name and would only work for a Mexican. So to see a bunch of non-Mexicans using a very similar name and going on to receive the plaudits they have is very funny indeed.

I didn’t think it was the MOTY so far. Definitely in my top 10, definitely the best WWE match (yes it is) in years. I had one big gripe (outside the commentary which has been discussed and was done remotely). I didn’t like the ripping of the masks as much as they did. The loser was going to unmask. And I understand the tactic of trying to loosen or tug at masks in matches, but they ripped each others so much you could clearly see who both were. 
 

But they were both excellent. Gable has had a career of turning chicken shit into chicken salad and he did it again. Kaiser from what bits I saw prior to this has been great as well. My concern now is what they do next with Gable. So much upside and he’s now made. So what’s next? Don’t drop the ball on him, make him intercontinental champ or something please!

As for what they do next with Gable in my opinion it's obvious.

His return to AAA should be to screw EGA out of the title at Triplemania Night 1 vs Dominik.

The heat would be nuclear.

Night 2 already has Rey vs Dominik advertised.

Perhaps Rey finally wins the AAA title and they could even throw in a Dominik face turn at the end potentially to send him back to the main roster full time with a freshen up.

Sign me up.

Why end the rivalry at OEGA losing the mask, particularly when in reality the entireity of the OEGA gimmick was that everyone knew it was Gable from day one.

Lucha Libre has a long history of feud's spanning across decades, even generations.

Taking someone's mask has often led to a rivalry continuing or intensifying rather than ending it.  

In reality, I don't think either guy will ever be involved in anything in WWE or elsewhere that will ever come close to this. Why end it prematurely?

Gable's beginning's as OEGA were a feud with Rey. There's serious legs in revisiting that, perhaps even have Gable be the one to beat Rey for the title then come back to Gable vs EGA for the title down the line.

If they have any intention of continuing to put any effort into AAA it makes no sense at all to end things here.

I wouldn't worry about that, happens a load in Lucha. Actually lead to one of my favourite wrestling photos, a Luchador called EL Pollo. (as i look it up it's no longer online. Nonline?, So here is one from the same bout).

I gave it a watch and really it showed me why I haven't missed watching today's wrestling one bit in that wrestling today almost never delivers anything like this.

There's probably going to be debate and discussion had for years how a WWE produced AAA mask vs mask match featuring an American and a German that evolved from a xenophobic comedy gimmick ended up being one of the best things under the WWE banner in decades, while retaining all of the respect and tradition of lucha libre, produced by the fucking Undertaker of all people. The story around this match is almost as fascinating as the match itself.

Before I stopped watching, Kaiser had become one of my favourites. He was an excellent heel who carried himself like a traditional snotty antagonist who acted like he was the best without winning anything, and his work was really good. Gable was the best all-rounder WWE had and it would be ridiculous if they didn't use this to transition him into a babyface role that he could clearly do in his sleep. So on the one hand it's not a surprise this was really good because these two guys are superb.

But everything from the entrances to the crowd to the ring announcer to the referee to the actual match itself was superb. It was a proper fight that rarely stopped for long, it felt high stakes and it didn't feel anywhere near as long as it was. I didn't care for the run-ins and the Creeds fucking up the table spot showed why they should have kept them out of it, but everything else was exactly as it should be. The post match stuff was emotional but not over-acted in the traditional WWE style. Kaiser's partner played her role really well too and seemed genuinely delighted to be there.

The commentary - well, JBL was as shit as ever and Rey Mysterio might as well have fallen asleep. I know Corey Graves has done some lead commentating on Smackdown (?) but I thought this was far and away the best I've ever heard him. He was knowledgeable but not a know-it-all, he told the story and he stayed balanced. For years we've had to put up with him doing his shite watered down WWE-moulded commentary villain bit when we could have had this. They might actually have something there, amazingly.

Maybe it's a one-off and they'll ruin it or run it into the ground like they always fucking do in WWE style. But instead of WWE's plodding, boring, over-produced wrestling allergic crap and AEW's finisher spam million gimmick match addicted bullshit, this felt like what mainstream wrestling could and should be and what I personally want to see from wrestling.
