You're misremembering slightly.

They announced Shawn & Diesel had beaten The Headshrinkers for the titles the previous night at Summerslam 95, not an In Your House.

 

As others have said, Revenge of The Taker was the first one we got and from that point on we got all PPVs live too   (Mania 13 maybe was shown live, but Rumble 97 definately was not - between Rumble and Mania was when we started getting Raw on a 4 day delay instead of an 11 day delay, which they accomplished by skipping a week of Raw and repurposing that week's episode of Raw as a Wednesday Night Special called "European Championship").

And that weird Boxing Day special previously mentioned that showed pretty much all of the December 96 In Your House, but with Dok Hendrix trying to explain the history of boxing day in between the matches - I remember loving that though.  It felt like a Christmas present, which was the point I suppose.  Reminds me of when they started showing matches from Heat (which we didn't get) on what to us was Superstars, where before that we'd just got the same matches we had on Shotgun but with different commentary.  It was like a new sparkly gift.

I think it's just really on the nose. Where do you watch a PPV? In your house. Then all the house based antics that come from that name probably sealed it. It's Vince 101. Like that special episode of Raw that has Thursday in the name twice.

I’m almost certain that a lot of highlights of the early IYH shows were shown on WWF Mania hosted by The Toddster. Definitely remember seeing extended highlights of IYH 5 with Bret Davey and the IC title saga with Dean Douglas and Ahmed Johnson beating Buddy Landell as a substitute.

When I think In Your House, I think Stephanie Wiand trying to give away a house with a coathanger in her mouth, dark matches with Ahmed Johnson dressed like the member of Harlem Heat he'd eventually become, and not knowing why the WWF Champion didn't wrestle at Buried Alive - felt like a massive cop out. If only I knew what PLEs in 2025 would look like. Shawn not being on the PPV in December too was irksome - Final Four and Canadian Stampede delivering two of the best main events of all time not long after. Just saying.

Oh, and the symmetry of Undertaker bouncing back and forth between Goldust and Mankind on six consecutive/alternating In Your Houses/big 5 events between May and November 96.

It comes to something when you have to hide the wrestling magazine in between FHM and Nuts magazines just to avoid dodgy looks. 

I remember buying the first couple of In Your House tapes because they had 'Bonus matches' on them, which were just the dark matches from the event but IYH 2 had Bret v Jean Pierre Lafitte and Kama v Undertaker in a coffin match. 13 year old me was all over that!

I completely bought into Ahmed being the WWF champion in waiting in 1996. When he won that 16 man battle royal on Raw to become #1 contender I was certain he was gonna be the man to dethrone Shawn Michaels even though they were buddies on TV at the time. Mad how quick and how far he plummeted once the injuries started piling up.

Yeah, I remember getting up about two hours earlier than I usually would before school on the Monday so I could watch the main matches spoiler free just in case some bollock at school ruined it. Not that there were many who were still watching in early 97 apart from me. Or at least they weren’t admitting to it. And thank fuck they sorted out showing the PPVs live by Mania 13 because I can only imagine how badly they’d have butchered that Bret vs Austin classic trying to eliminate all the violence and blood. It would’ve probably been reduced to just the intros and then straight to Shamrock forcing Bret to release the Sharpshooter while never showing Austin and the puddle of blood he was now submerged in. They’d have rendered that match unwatchable if they were still in the ‘let's show it on delay at 7pm on Wednesday evening’ phase.

That might’ve been a one-off though. They definitely did show brief highlights of the In Your Houses on Raw and Mania but I remember IYH 5 got more extended highlights for some reason. Think a whole episode of Raw was just a replay of the top matches off that one. Probably just because it was so close to Christmas.

Shame they didn't do it beyond the second, if they'd done the extended cut of the Triple Header one from September we'd have seen Ahmed squashing Skip wearing the fancy Harlem Heat tights.

Not sure if this is the same Battle Royale, but the chaotic way Ahmed wins this is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. Distilled Ahmed. Uncontrolled madness.

No amount of stiff strikes or worked shoot promos over the next thirty years could ever match this for convincing me pro-wrestling was real.
