TheScarlettChad Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 MJF is still an edge Lord dickhead I see. To think people thought he was the future of the business. Maybe a trip up North where he can't say what he likes anymore thus humbling him would be a good idea. Quote

I just don't like the guy, I don't think calling women sluts and "call girls" is a good promo, Maybe others do, Its just not for me, though! Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted January 16, 2025 Author Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 Obviously MJF can be good, but it seems like if the story doesn't force him to step up then he just relies on the edge lord shit. He's a character than definitely needs to be booked very carefully. Quote

He's been awful ever since his return and he's getting worse even if his matches have remained solid. It's more the "To think people thought he was the future of the business" part of your post. Whether you liked him or not a few years ago when he was great all the time, I'd have thought it would be obvious why people would think that. Quote

I see your point, but even then, he'd rely on cheap heat like "Methanie", I think what I meant was, If he goes to WWE, We may see a more focused and thus better MJF, Because as Goosh said, when he isn't focused, he relies on lazy cheap heat. But when he's switched on, he IS good and he could be the future, but he's letting himself down with all that slut crap. Quote

DavidB6937 Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 It's easy to say "oh he should fuck off to WWE" like he hasn't done some amazing work in AEW. He's been one of the best in AEW in ring and at character work at times. It's easy to get down on him now because he's doing some right shit but then so is Mox. Can't just wish everyone would fuck off somewhere else every time they have a bit of questionable booking. How much of Mox or MJF is on them? Or the bookers? We don't really know. Quote
Chili Posted January 16, 2025 Posted January 16, 2025 (edited) MJF was amazing until he came back and fell down the snake to the bottom rung if his character again. He was great because he'd be an edgy little prick who got his arse handed to him in the end a lot. If he had come back and evolved his gimmick further, we'd love it. It would have even been a great touch if he did turn villain but it was made out that he was doing it because while he was gone others took over his place, and his natural nature to be a jealous little baby took over. But no, just reverted back to his set type. He's extremely good when he dials it in correctly. I think loads of us including me need to remember AEW and WWE exist in the world, but should also exist in their own logical world. There was some bollocks about WWE treating the pile-driver as sacred BUT AEW having the women just kick out of them. So what, they are their own little worlds, they can really do as they wish without the comparison. I need to remember that more myself given it was so long when we just had one promotion dictating the industry and we all got a bit Stockholm from it. Edited January 16, 2025 by Chili Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 It's not just the edgelord stuff, it's that MJF goes into every promo with ten ideas rather than just fully exploring one. Against Ospreay, it couldn't just be the hard-working high-flyer who wants to please the audience vs. the villain who wants to take every shortcut and doesn't care about the fans, it also had to be an overdone America vs. UK gimmick, and it had to be about how dangerous the Tiger Driver '91 was, and MJF had to keep bringing up Ospreay's family. Build a story around one of those things, because trying to do all of them means none of get fleshed out properly. Same thing going on now with Jarrett. MJF has a hundred edgelord lines, and they could be excusable if he actually went anywhere with them - Jarrett is a veteran on one last run, but he knows he's not as good as he once was, so having a heel to play off those insecurities is a story. MJF trying to do that, but Jarrett being able to see through him is a story. Jarrett thinking that nothing MJF can say will get under his skin, but MJF still managing to get there via the Owen Hart stuff, is a story. MJF trying to expose Jarrett as a prick who doesn't suit being a babyface, while Jarrett's POV is that he's been who MJF was and saw the error of his ways and knows MJF can be better, is a story. Hell, MJF just wanting to ruin Jarrett's retirement run because he's a dickhead and he can, that's a story. But instead, every one of those possibilities is thrown out in a single line to get a Saved By The Bell "woah-oh!" shocked reaction, rather than to actually build anything, and then Jarrett trying to show MJF that he can do everything he can just results in doing the same edgelord material, without doing anything as a babyface to say, "look, it's easy, anyone can do this shit" or "see, even if it's not true, it sucks when people say this stuff to you", just turned it into an extended "Yo Momma" exchange. Paid Members FLips Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 (edited) MJF was great at first because nobody else was doing promos like him but mostly because he could also put on a really good match. The thing is though he’s been doing those same promos now for 6 whole years and they’ve lost all their edge to the point it’s now kind of sad. Worrying too because the one time he deviated from his character to be a face, his promos got worse because now he was doing the same thing but to himself (oh I’m just a poor ADD riddled Jew Boy). So if that’s what he offers as a face, and that’s all he can offer as a heel for 6 years with no deviation, what can he actually offer? I hate to agree with ScarlettChad but WWE would be good for him to force him out of his comfort zone. I fear the longer he stays in AEW the more he’ll depreciate. Paid Members tiger_rick Posted January 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 I don't disagree with that point either. I think we're close to the point where it's better for everyone if MJF tries WWE. Would be a good get for WWE, would force him to work in a structured environment where some of the short-cuts don't exist, or his schtick is just fresh, and would open up a spot in AEW for someone to fill. A few years ago, I would have seen it as a massive loss for AEW. I don't anymore. Agree with Dev too. Any pretence that he wasn't (and isn't at times) fucking brilliant as such a young age is someone trying to suck their own cock. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted January 16, 2025 Author Paid Members Posted January 16, 2025 (edited) All this talk of going to WWE is moot, he's signed a new long term deal with them and will be around for awhile. The problem with MJF's current run is that the past two big stories he had (CM Punk and Adam Cole) completely deconstructed his cocky edge lord heel character. After that he needed to evolve and move forwards. Returning from injury as that exact same original cocky edge lord character and brushing aside all he went through is a huge step back and totally regressive. At this point with him it's change or die. Edited January 16, 2025 by LaGoosh Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted January 16, 2025 Members Posted January 16, 2025 I'll be honest, every time I've tried to get more into AEW, a big deciding factor for me has been MJF, and it seemed like at one point he was all over the show, and it put me right off. That's not me saying he's shit (he's clearly not) it's just that his whole character and personality isn't for me. I really dislike the way he comes across (I get thats often the point) and wrestles, and I just don't get it, but thats from the lens of a very casual viewer, let's be honest. Investment clearly rewards appreciation or something. Having said that, he was absolutely phenomenonal in that Bryan match that I saw (no idea what event this was) and I'd happily give him another go. Quote
