sivy Posted August 18, 2025 Posted August 18, 2025 I do enjoy Alveraz free hour show round 8pm most nights. His rants are always entertaining to me. He's a lot better away from Dave. Quote
Merzbow Posted August 18, 2025 Author Posted August 18, 2025 Stevie started going down the "AEW guys can't work" pipeline that all the old men do, pretty big talk coming from a lifelong comedy jobber. The modern wrestling talk is just a more polite Cornette at times. I do enjoy hearing him talk about his own career though, the rankings videos are good fun. Quote

If anything he seems a bit too self deprecating a lot of the time to me. Admittedly I don’t listen to every show, I dip in depending on the subject, so maybe I’ve missed something. But he seems like one of the least ego centric wrestlers out there to me. It might be a case of the way he talks, not necessarily what he says. Sounds like a bit of a know-it-all to me. Quote

People eating on podcasts is a real bugbear of mine. You’ve had all day to eat, why wait until the podcast starts to slop your mouth between every other word? I remember really looking forward to Paul London on The Kevin Steen Show. This was back when London was doing PWG shows. He spent the whole time eating a messy burger and chewing loudly. Nothing of interest came from it. Quote
Paid Members DCW Posted August 19, 2025 Paid Members Posted August 19, 2025 I re-read William Regal's book again recently so thought I'd give his podcast a go. The host is just insufferable, though not in the usual obnoxious wrestling pod host way, but in a weird deferential way. He doesn't seem to be able to grasp when Regal is telling a fairly obvious joke either. Such a pity cos Regal is a good talker with an interesting story, just needed someone to steer him away from tangents. Quote
Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted August 19, 2025 Paid Members Posted August 19, 2025 William Regal's podcast was one of my most disappointing wrestling-related things in recent memory. The bloke could't tell a simple anecdote without going round all the houses, disappearing down several tangents and shoehorning in 'I'm hard but I'm not anybody, me'. Just a load of rambling bollocks. Quote
davertfnewman Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 I'm not a big fan of Raven or Regal, and they're not fans of each other either, but I did like the bit in a shoot interview with the former where he was with someone like Kevin Sullivan and they got onto the fact that Raven had been hanging out with Danny Boy Collins while working in Europe and Danny had totally ruined Regal's cover story as some hard man shooter, which Dave Taylor had done previously as well. Talking about people who are dense and don't get it, there was this brilliant bit in DUH Hannibal's interview with Ricky Morton, who's basically an always-working one-man-show: Ricky: "Robert and I have never seen eye-to-eye." (Smiles and waits for the reaction) Ricky: "You don't get it, do you?" Hannibal: "... No..." Ricky: "Robert's got an eye that doesn't go the right way." Quote

Paul London is normally great value on these things. His contributions to Cafe de Rene, in particular, were the highlights of that podcast. He created Dr Juvi and, for that, we should all be grateful. Quote
davertfnewman Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 Sadly, a lot of that stuff seems to have been scrubbed, but it was hilarious. "Kiss me, Randy." Quote

The only highlight was Batista showing up with a ticket, checking if he was in the empty seat next to me, as I nervously smiled and awkwardly put a thumb up before he said sorry and went down the other end of the row. Should have given you the thumbs down. So is regal a posh boy and the Blackpool hard man shooter act a gimmick? That's disappointing. Quote
davertfnewman Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 (edited) He's from a family of building contractors in Codsall Wood, Wolverhampton. The old "shooting/carnival" thing was all a work. If you ever watch the Before They Were WWF Superstars segment they had on Confidential and DVD, the setup for challenging the crowd often involved plants who would go out and take up the challenge of the wrestlers on show. Doc Dean and Buffalo Brehney (big guy with a curly mullet) can be seen talking to the guy with the mic talking them up. Edited August 20, 2025 by davertfnewman Quote

I saw his live show in Blackpool a few years back which was advertised as a Q&A (at least partially, can't remember if there was a more structured segment at the start) and I genuinely think he only managed to take a single question because of how long and rambling his answer was. It was being filmed for a WWE Network special as well, though I don't know if they ever released it. Quote
davertfnewman Posted August 19, 2025 Posted August 19, 2025 Going back to Dupree and London, this video suggests they knew about the Janel Grant situation before it went public. Quote
