Other than The Rock, and maybe Bad Boys II, it's pretty bleak.

It isn't really. Aside from the Transformers shit he's had a solid action film career. Even Six Underground was decent and that had Ryan Reynolds in it. Ambulance is superb.

I hadn't heard of those, so looked them up - they're his two most recent. My info needed updating. Prior to that, I was thinking purely in terms of the Transformers series (that's five out of fifteen films, though - a third of his output), and Pearl Harbor - I also can't stand Armageddon, but I accept that that will be contentious.

Apart from Pearl Harbour, I like everything of his that I've seen. I will admit there are a lot of films he's made i haven't seen though. I think the films his style influenced are far worse than anything he's done himself - the trend for big over the top shapes colliding or near missing action sequences that he set a blueprint for. So to bring it back around to the original topic, Michael Bay-esque is probably valid and worse than actual Michael Bay.

While I like some of Michael Bay's stuff, I'm going to struggle to ever like him based entirely on what he did with a franchise I grew up with, and had (at that point) looked forward to a proper film about my entire life. The Transformers films are definitely showing his worst instincts.

That said, I enjoyed this book a lot - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Michael-F-ing-Bay-Unheralded-Genius/dp/1502848619 - which was a look at his work from a positive slant, and treating him seriously as a filmmaker. I generally like learning positive takes about people I instinctively take against, and it has made me appreciate some of what he does more.

I also like the general term 'bayhem'.

Michael Bay's Directorial career according to me:

Hits:

- 13 Hours

- The Rock

- Armageddon

Get in the bin:

- Ambulance

- Pain & Gain

- Transformers (made it to 3, couldn't get past that)

- Pearl Harbor

- The Island

- Bad Boys II

He seems to be a producer on a lot of stuff that I hadn't realised. Most of which I hadn't seen (all those horror movie remakes that I avoid like the plague). I did like the Jack Ryan series and the two Quiet Place movies. Had no idea he was involved in those. Don't feel like they have all his markings over them.

For me, this is probably the overwhelming sentiment; I can accept it's an irrationally disproportionate weighting on my part.

I did love The Rock when I saw it in the cinema. Bad Boys II I enjoyed, but I didn't think it was anything particularly outstanding. Will try to check out Six Underground and Ambulance at some point.

I really love this film. It’s probably the one of his I’ve enjoyed the most.

It's really good, very funny too. I'd like to see him try slightly lower key stuff like that.

Transformers One (cinema)

Decent. Rushes through too much at the end and I've never been arsed about Transformers but I quite enjoyed it. Brian Tyree Henry's voice work is the standout.

The Room Next Door (cinema)

If you're an Almodovar fan, you'll get a lot from this. I'm not really, so I was mostly here for Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore's acting masterclass. Just about worth it for them.

Infested (Shudder)

French horror film about a spider invasion in an apartment block. Not as mean-spirited and gory as I expected but still very enjoyable. Would make a nice double-bill with this year's also enjoyable Sting.

Starry Eyes (Plex)

Not quite as good as when I first saw it and too on-the-nose with its Hollywood commentary but the final half an hour is outstanding. Alex Essoe should be a big star by now.

The Addiction (Plex)

I don't like Abel Ferrara and I didn't like this. The most pretentious vampire film I've ever watched. Lili Taylor is great though.

The Children (2008)

Smart little British horror film about kids turned inexplicably murderous. Really good ending, too, was surprised how much I enjoyed this.

Homebodies (Shudder)

Superb horror-comedy about some coffin dodgers who fight back violently against attempts to evict them from their apartment block. Very funny and violent, practically unknown but well worth seeing.

Maniac (2012) (Plex)

Just think the style of this and the dialogue sinks it. Impressively disgusting effects but that's all it's going for it. The 1979 original is amazing though.

Dark Harvest

Aside from some amazingly violent murders, this is rubbish. It's got a good idea but it's wasted on too much family and relationship melodrama.

Hubie Halloween

Sorry everyone but we enjoyed it. It's an Adam Sandler film so you know what you're in for; cast, sense of humour and everything. Not every joke lands, but enough of them do and the cast is strong enought to see it through to the other side. Keep your expectations firmly where they should be for a 2020 Adam Sandler direct to Netflix comedy and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom

It'd been a long, long time since I'd watched this so thought I'd give it another go from a perspective that isn't "gotta watch this edgy as shit shit" and while it definitely is horribly gross it's one of the better depictions of just how putrid fascism is. In the subsequent years I've learned far more about Pasolini and his politics and came to adore him and see his work in a better light.

Neon Demon

Absolute worthless trash, Refn doesn't know how humans talk, act or think and it's not even as visually pleasing as I'd expected. He also really hates women and young girls, that one gross morgue scene is hilarious for all the wrong reasons though. He 100% thought this was his Lynch-esque film.

Makes The Substance look like a feminist masterpiece.

I already l also rewatched all four Rebuild of Evangelion films, probably better suited for the anime thread but they're an excellent retelling or arguably a sequel to the show.
