Part V and ...In Manhattan are the least interesting ones. I've said it before and will always say it Friday the 13th Part 5 is one of the funniest films ever made. It's absolute fucking bonkers from start to finish. Every scene has at least one absolutely mental moment or ridiculous creative choice in it. I love it so much. Manhattan is a pile of shit but still fun to watch in a "when are we going to get to the fireworks factory" type of way. It makes me laugh throughout watching them constantly trying so hard not to do anything that requires a budget and actually going to New York. The sheer fact that they take a boat to New York from a fucking lake alone highlights how hilariously stupid this film is. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted October 23, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 23, 2024 I once watched all the Wrong Turn films in one day, all six of them, and nobody ever needs to watch past the second one. I also did the same with Final Destination and they're all exactly the same. Just watch the Mary Elizabeth Winstead one for obvious reasons. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted October 23, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 23, 2024 (edited) Child’s Play Loved it, thought everything about it was class. Great effects, excellent villain, and probably some of the best child acting I’ve seen. In parts it felt like the tension of Alien but then the latter half was almost Terminator like, which sounds like a mad thing to say about a film about a living doll. I think there’s enough going on with it that it stands solid outside of the horror realm. It’s just a good film on it’s own merit. Might be my favourite so far this spooky season. This is the end, friend. Edited October 23, 2024 by FLips Quote
Dr. Alan Grant Posted October 24, 2024 Posted October 24, 2024 Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (first watch) - awful. The returning cast do the best they can, but the new characters are a complete waste. I firmly maintain that Justin Theroux should stick to more serious work like The Leftovers. The man is not suited to comedy. 2/5 Zombieland: Double Tap (first watch) - a step down from the first, but Zoey Deutch as Madison completely ran away with the whole film. Soy cute. 3/5 Zoolander - I rewatched this before I check out the sequel for the first time. Daft fun. I expect 2 to be crushingly disappointing. 3/5 Random question. Does anyone know of any other terms akin to Hitchcockian, Kubrickian and Spielbergian? Quote

I mean I guess you could do similar with any director like Lynchian or Burtonesque which relates to a lot of films that could be described as looking “a bit gothy”. Quote

I've seen Shymalanian used in relation to twists. But should really be used in association with people stealing a career based off one moderately decent idea. Ah I've seen HS posted the same but I wrote this already so fuck it. Quote

Paid Members JLM Posted October 24, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 24, 2024 Reminded of the New Yorker interview with legendary Simpsons writer John Swartzwelder: What do you make of the compliment “Swartzweldian”? I guess I understand what they’re driving at, and it all sounds very complimentary, and I thank everybody for that, but I can’t help thinking “Swartzweldian” is about the most awkward-sounding word in the English language. I mean, I thought “Oakleyesque” and “Vittiriffic” [after “Simpsons” writers Bill Oakley and Jon Vitti] were bad, but “Swartzweldian”! So how would you describe your sense of humor, your comedic sensibility? Swartzweldian. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted October 24, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 24, 2024 Fright Night (1985) Another belter. Great suspense and effects, comedy in all the right places, and Peter Vincent: Vampire Killer is my favourite character in any of these horrors I’ve watched. He’s great and I was rooting for him the entire time! Chris Sarandon is a stud and he’s two for two between this and Child’s Play. This has it’s own original credits song as well, and Sparks and Devo! What a dream! It’s like all the best bits of the films so far in one film. Could even be my favourite so far. Quote

I really like Fright Night but I'm one of the few who thinks the sequel might be even better. They're both great though. Quote

The plan tonight was meant to be Child’s Play 2 but it was typically not free on Prime like the original is so we watched Fright Night instead. Glad I did now! Quote

Paid Members Carbomb Posted October 25, 2024 Paid Members Posted October 25, 2024 Other than The Rock, and maybe Bad Boys II, it's pretty bleak. Quote
