That Star Trek thread somebody was talking about

Second episode felt a lot weaker than the first, and didn't really add anything to what we already know. 

The Romulan thing all feels a bit "Hail Hydra", and not all that surprising. Was pretty clear the story was going to be, on some level, that Starfleet had Gone Wrong, and I suppose a story of them being infiltrated by Proper Baddies is an easier/lazier story than corruption over time.

Irish Romulan is hilarious. Especially as she said "feckin'", so they're not even pretending it's not an Irish accent.

Probably popped bigger for a reference to the Gorn than for anything else that will happen in this series.

The strength of this is still in Patrick Stewart's performance. More of that, less of turning this into a big romp.

Her keep calling him JL does my head in. It's plodding along at a snail's pace, but Patrick Stewart gives it gravitas. Everybody else feels like they're trying to get up to his level, but they've got nothing to work with. We have a couple of loud moments to grab your attention during a slow, plodding show. I kind of want to see where it goes, but also completely forgot it was available today.

I wasn't overly enthused about watching last night. My attention completely wandered off a couple of times, but I thought it was better than last week. It benefitted from a much lower amount of Shoreditch Shitehawk and his woeful sister. 

I thought Huw knocking around was a nice touch, bit random but I suppose it kind of makes sense in context. 

That JL business is truly woeful. Proper go away heat. Her character is a bit 2D generally, but this is Poochie levels of shit.

Do they really need two one dimensional grizzled loners on the ship? Goofy science woman is going to be unbearable too.

The thing with Discovery is that they could do "Star Trek" episodes to break up the Michael Burnham show, and those episodes were interesting. This show won't have that liberty available, so is going to have to find other ways to keep it going, unfortunately they've taken the "snail's pace with the occasional loud moment to make sure you're paying attention" option, rather than using fewer episodes to keep it moving at a reasonable pace and maybe having fewer episodes. 

All those emergency holograms just to let that guy show off how many accents he can do as well.

What is the best TNG episode and why is it Starship Mine.

I've stuck out the three episodes because the critic reviews at the launch all pointed to that being the moment everything came together, but this show is... not good.

Nothing's landing. The Hollywood sheen can't hide the ropey dialogue, flat characterisation, and deliberate question-hanging. It feels like a fan fic written by someone who only saw Picard in First Contact. Or, more likely, somebody had an idea for a spinoff series that had no backing, so they swapped one of the character names for Picard. I'm yet to see Jean Luc (JL? Get in the fucking sea) use his intelligence and empathy, which were his trademarks. Instead, he's stuck in the middle of Hollyoaks as filmed by JJ Abrams, getting in fights and reciting exposition about shoehorned mythology they are STILL not filling us in on.

I'm pretty sure I'm convincing myself I fancy Orla Brady with Vulcan ears on to maintain my interest at some points. (I know she's Romulan, but if you can define a Romulan based on the story so far, you're better than this show.) 

It's telling that the most exciting moment was Stewart unleashing Acting (tm) during his interview. A glimmer of actual Picard.

I'll no doubt have this on, because I've nowt else to do in my pyjamas on a Saturday morning while the washing's on, but this is a major misfire so far.

@jazzygeofferz any thoughts on favourite TNG episode? I think its Cause and Effect for me, though All good things... is bloody good. I saw an interview with the writers where they said they wished that had been the first film, it only took them two weeks to write whereas the screenplay for Generations took a year.

There are too many tochoose from. Inner Light  is fantastic. All Good Things is a nice ending. Brannon Braga wrote some great episodes, buthe also wrote Sub Rosa. I might have to go with Chain Of Command. It's really dark, there's a lot of intrigue and David Warner is great as Gul Madred. His scenes with Picard are so chilling. He's such a good villain, then with the crew  having to deal withJellico's radically different, almost ruthless style. It's a fascinating watch.
