Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted January 24, 2025 Awards Moderator Posted January 24, 2025 We’ve got one of the celeb Shakespeares lined up for March, the Hiddleston/Atwell Much Ado, but I have hope that it’ll still be good. Hiddleston particularly is supposed to be at his best on stage and I haven’t seen him in anything live before. If it does turn out to be disappointing, we at least have Inside No 9 the night before which I know nothing about and I hope isn’t rubbish. Outside of London though (yay!) we got tickets to the opening night of Gary Oldman’s play in York. I’m not quite sure why it’s in York, but I approve. Quote

Got that booked myself and I rarely get a chance to go to the theatre but genuinely can't wait! Doing everything I can to avoid spoilers. I think just seeing them live will be a wonderful experience in itself. My friend met them at the stage door last night so I might be a bit of a geek and attempt it. I'm going by myself as I desperately wanted a ticket and didn't want to faff around trying to organise other people etc. Quote

I'm seeing Number 9 in February with the eldest boy and in April with Mrs W, were all very looking forward to it. I've had to mute all the League / number 9 Facebook pages in on, luckily I don't do any other social media so hopefully can avoid spoilers. Mrs W missed a few episodes in weekdays l series 6-8 so I keep getting in at her to watch them them just so I can have another rewatch. Quote

I would say Hiddleston hopefully doesn't fall under the "celebrity Shakespeare" banner, on account of being a Proper Actor, who did RADA, darling. Quote

I’d say he doesn’t fall under that banner either - nor does Atwell, who I’m sure was doing an Ibsen play with Giles Terera a couple of years ago - but with it being the same theatre company as The Tempest and the Tom Holland one last year, I expect the ticket prices* are more for his celebrity name value than because he was a great Henry V in The Hollow Crown. *we got the cheapest ones and they were still about £40 Edited January 24, 2025 by HarmonicGenerator Once more unto the edit, dear friends, once more Quote

Also, many thanks to Pat for mentioning the reviews for The Tempest, because I was really tempted to book and would rather spend that on something better based on what I've now read. I am really looking forward to having theatre on the doorstep every day if I want (within reason reason given some of the prices). I swear where I live currently has basically been panto for 3 months. The Arcola is a lovely little theatre. Haven't been anywhere near as often as I should have. Paid Members Monkee Posted January 26, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 26, 2025 The Tempest last night was very good. The staging was very dark and atmospheric, and I loved the direction of it. I enjoyed Sigourney Weaver’s performance too. I saw there were some bad reviews but Prospero isn’t really a jaunty character and has a lot of dialogue so I’m not entirely sure what more she could have done with the part. The absolute scene stealer though was Mason Alexander Park as Ariel. Coming on stage looking like a cross between Lady Gaga and Till Lindemann, they were absolutely stunning and their performance was outstanding. I couldn’t take my eyes of them when they were on stage. I only realised last night that a lot of the sand performers are in Much Ado About Nothing so I’m really looking forward to seeing Mason again. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted March 16, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 16, 2025 (edited) Back at the Sam Wanamaker theatre at The Globe for Cymbeline: I know literally nothing about the play itself, other than it's a tragedy. I know it's based on the possibly historic Celtic chieftain Cunobelin, but I wanted to go into this production without any prior knowledge. EDIT: Currently the intermission. Really good so far; re-jigged to be told through a queer/feminist lens. All the cast superb so far - the actors playing Cymbeline and Cloten were off, so (being that The Globe company don't do understudies as a policy) were read in for by two scripted, but very skilful, stand-ins. The actor playing the villain Iachimo is astounding, as is the one playing Imogen. I've been given to understand that Cymbeline is one of Shakespeare's weaker works, but they've done a stellar job so far. Edited March 16, 2025 by Carbomb Benoit Assou-Ekotto Quote

Looks like general sale starts tomorrow It was only announced just after middday today so i'd be surprised if there's presale before they go on sale tomorrow. I'm seeing it again on Saturday, Mrs Wiseau won't be impressed when she finds out i'm dragging her to London to see it when we could have seen it in Birmingham, although as i've seen it already i know its well worth the travel and seeing it again closer to home. she wasn't happy when I told her Sparks have announced Wolverhampton weeks after she begrudgingly agreed to accompany me to Manchester to see them so this news in the same week is both ace for me and potentially going to get me in trouble Quote
