[METAL ON METAL]

Was fortunate to get to see Glengarry Glen Ross during its previews on Broadway two weeks ago with the absolutely incredible cast of Bob Odenkirk, Kieran Culkin, Bill Burr and Michael McKean.

Purposely went into it with limited knowledge of the play and without reading the original Mamet material or watching the film but my wife and I loved it. Relatively short run time with it being two acts that are 45/50 mins each, which means the show just flies by and doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Great sharp dialogue and by all accounts it’s played a little more comedically than all previous incarnations.

Honestly not a single weak link in the cast but in a group of acclaimed amazing actors, the star performance was undoubtedly by Bill Burr - you’d never have known it was his Broadway debut. Genuinely hope to see him in more roles, obviously one of the most hilarious people there is but he’s got serious acting chops to go with it.

Met them all at the stage door afterwards, all very generous with their time and now I have a cherished picture with David St. Hubbins himself.

Unfortunately ticket prices are astronomical since Culkin won the Oscar which is a shame as I'd absolutely love to see it.

Heading to New York end of the month, got 4 shows in 3 days and a free slot, won the operation mincemeat ballot so went from second last row to front row directly under where Jak Malone sings Dear Bill which will make me weep like a baby.

Also seeing the Death becomes her musical, Oh Mary and a revival of Pirates of Penzance with David Hyde Pierce!!!

Got tickets for Prima facie in Dublin in January with Jodie Comer, utterly stunning piece of theatre.

Fortunately we got tickets a few weeks before the Oscars, as I did fear that happening. We paid $79 each for tickets that are now $213 each, obscene markup.

Very jealous you’re getting to see Oh Mary, that was at the top of our wish list but we happened to be there when Titus Burgess had just taken over the titular role which meant ticket availability was pretty much nonexistent. While over there we went into the box office to enquire about tickets for that days show and were quoted $225 each for balcony seats, so we sadly didn’t get to see it.

I'm well jealous of this. GGR is an amazing play, as well as a superb film, and that is a cast I would've paid a ton to see in the West End. In an age where theatres would rather bank on bad musicals than any straight plays at all, it's great to know Broadway's still giving straight theatre that kind of investment.

It was a fantastic experience and I’m lucky it lined up for when I was there.

One thing that did surprise me was for this whole run (where pretty much every performance is sold out or standing room only tickets) they don’t have the balcony open at all, which seems like a massive missed opportunity for both them to earn more money and more importantly for more affordable tickets for the public.

 

Interestingly, there’s been rumours once the current cast finishes their run in June that an all female cast will take over. Names like Patti LuPone and Natasha Lyonne have been thrown about by some.

Ooh, nice. I can see Natasha Lyonne in it, maybe as Moss. I'd like to see Janelle Monáe as Roma.

Just managed to snag a couple of tickets for Inside No.9 in Hull at the end of October. Was surprised there was still some of the better priced tickets left, but managed to get two in the stalls for £36 each

I caught it in London in January, It's a perfect goodbye to a fantastic show.

I missed the original Inside No. 9 Stage/Fright run, and ended up getting tickets for two separate shows.

Sat in two queues for two different venues. Got let in. Selected two tickets on the ATG Tickets sites, picked a seat, checked out, got confirmation email. Great! Only, there’s one seat. So apparently, when I picked the section of two seats, it doesn’t actually add both seats to your basket, and the website also doesn’t think to pop up an alert to say, “You selected 2 tickets, but only have one in your basket. Are you sure you want to continue checking out? Or are you forgetting to pay us even more money?” I also stupidly picked the non-refundable ticket, so don’t think my other half (who’s also a fan of the show) would be happy if I told her I was going to see the stage show on my own.

So, turn in second queue comes up. Make sure to select two seats this time, checked out, happy days.

Still need to find out how to break it to her that I’ll be going to see it a second time on my own, in a different city, though ?

Punch at the Young Vic last night was one of the best things I have seen in ages. Even though her off Corrie was ill and was replaced by a read in. Stuck a thin landing between preachy and feeling realistic. Would highly, highly recommend and it's going to a larger theatre later in the year due to popular demand.

Took my son to see Beegu at The Unicorn in Southwark. It's great getting to go to the theatre with him, and he absolutely loved it. He's reading it in school so seeing up and close was great. Would recommend to anybody in London wanting to do something with their kids.

Saw Hold On To Your Butts this Saturday. It's a 3 person live recreation of Jurassic Park. Absolutely brilliant and hilarious. It's currently on tour so if it's coming near you I highly recommend you see it.

Really enjoyed it when we saw it last summer. It’s back at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, alongside a new Lord of the Rings themed one called Fly, You Fools!

We are currently in York to see Gary Oldman in Krapp’s Last Tape. I know it’s Samuel Beckett, it’s a one-man play and it’s an hour long, but other than that I’m going in completely cold. I might love it, I might not, I’m excited to find out, but whatever way, Gary Oldman on stage should be something special.

Inside Number 9 Stage/Fright has had a few more dates added to the tour,  my son has an Access pass so qualifies for a free carers ticket to the Alex in Birmingham so it looks like we'll be seeing Number 9 a third time! It will have been over six months since we last saw it so it'll be like watching a new show. I'm hoping

For Rusty Lee on our night as aside from Joe Lycett and Nick Owen I can't think of anyone it might be for Birmingham (not sure if we are still spoilering the guest hostage thing. In London we had Emilia Fox and Louis bloody Theroux the second time, i was majorly amazed by Louis, then I find out that the night before was Sir Ian Mccellen! )

Having looked at the whole list of guests there's so many I would've loved to see. Could've bankrupted myself just on that.

Will be interesting to see if they repeat people on the tour or if it's a whole new bunch. Not that I can afford to go again but glad I got to see it before.
