Richie Freebird Posted May 6, 2024 Author Posted May 6, 2024 Fair play Keithy, that's what I get for copy / pasting a previous typo. ? **Quickly edits about 5 previous posts** Quote
Ro_y Disco Posted May 7, 2024 Posted May 7, 2024 Great posts, as always Richie! I saw the results on Cagematch. I noticed the John Rare match was a 4 minute no contest and wondered what mad shit he'd done this time to cause the match to end abruptly. Hacked off a limb or something. As it happens, it's the other IWA DS trope of non-deathmatch guy getting in over his head and bailing early. Re. The Body, if you're not aware of his... erm body of work, it's worth looking up some of his stuff in XPW. The the end of this match is a sufficiently brutal example Quote

Dai Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Finished Tournement of Survival, and thought it was awful. Last years wasnt up to much either, so it seems like theyve jumped the shark. The TOS breathed new life into deathmatches for the first few years. A rabid crowd and some crazy action. Seems like, as with TOD and King of the Death Matches, it just gets to a point when it loses all steam. Not much of note to report in this one, apart from the final being abysmal. Just walking from one big spot to the other. I dont know if they were rushed for time, but even for the low standards of death matches, it was very noticable how they just did a big spot and then just waltzed into the next one. Quote
Kfogg1991 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I have to agree with you. I think gcw has really dipped recently it's a shame Quote
Ro_y Disco Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 I recently signed up for an IWTV subscription after being tempted for ages. For the price tag of about 7 quid, there is a ridiculous amount of content, tons of deathmatch stuff (the CZW and IWA M-S stuff alone seems to cover pretty much every show they've ever released). Here are some highlights I've watched recently: Remarkable Wrestling "Chamber of Horrors" This is the first-ever indie Elimination Chamber match. It cannot be understated how AWESOME a job they've done building the structure. It is really cool (while also having the slightly rickety appeal of an old Doctor Who set). Sadly, I found most of the wrestlers in the match sub-par and the match quite boring. I've seen lots of positive reviews online, so that could just be me struggling with the long runtime of the match. X Brand Wrestling "Glitch In The Matrix" - North Korean Battleground match: Matt Tremont vs The North Korean Assassin Despite the xenophobic gimmick and the fact he's clearly a white dude, the NKA is great as the scary foreign heel. This us just an excellent, old-school deathmatch. There were some cool, innovative weapons with a box of barbed wire wrapped bricks and a tub of dry ice. Fun stuff! CZW "New Heights 2011" - Gusset Plate Deathmatch - Danny Havoc vs MASADA I've wanted to watch this match for years, having only seen a clip of the arm spot before. This is violent beyond belief and a really hard watch, but also a great match. While looking up more Matt Tremont stuff, I came across a WhatCulture article about the worst ever bladers. The article says "shortly after debuting in CZW, Tremont was wrestling another big bald man and the two engaged in a headbutt-off. After both guys perform a double running 'butt, they separate and juice. Tremont gives himself a ridiculously long cut, one that stretches across his forehead and up his head." The linked video is no longer available and I can't match this up with any results on Cagematch. Anyone any idea what match this is? Quote
Paid Members waters44 Posted July 22, 2024 Paid Members Posted July 22, 2024 No idea about that Matt Tremont match I’m afraid. I know he had a match with Kobayashi pretty early in his career, maybe him? Not sure though Have you seen MASADA vs Jun Kasai from the CZW Wrestlecon show in 2013? That’s the best (worst?!) gusset plate deathmatch I remember seeing, really bloody and violent Quote
Dai Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Yeah, it's surely the Abby kobayashi match from TOD. They definitely do the double headbutt spot and both blade straight after. It's a nice blade job but nothing as gruesome as that description makes out. Quote
Ro_y Disco Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Thanks @waters44 @Dai that must be the one. I'm fairly sure I've seen that match already, so seems it was exaggerated to fill a top 10 list. Will definitely give that Kasai/MASADA match a watch. I recall seeing an exhaustingly brutal match from CZW at WrestleCon show, so I wonder if I might have seen it already & forgot a lot of the details. Quote
Merzbow Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 What's the best way of watching FREEDOMS these days? I've been back in the mood for some good deathmatches and the likes of Violento Jack are just light-years ahead of the current US scene. Quote

Other than tape traders I think your only option is the odd match they put on their YouTube channel unfortunately Quote

Merzbow Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Awesome, thanks. I used to use a Russian social media site but their streaming speeds are horrendous these days, I think they're slowed down outside of the country. Quote
