Did Brawler not wrestle HHH for the belt at one point?

Yeah, probably around 2000. Brawler also grappled with Shawn Michaels for the belt once at MSG. MSG.

Jesus, bet the lads in the locker room were happy with Brawler getting that pay day

He won a battle royal at the start of the show, and faced Shawn for the title later that night. I doubt anyones payoff was greatly affected by what sounds like a rib on the audience

Wasn't it supposed to be Bret Hart in Brawler role, but obviously Montreal happened? MSG must have been around December 1997.

ADDED:

WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - September 22, 1997 (14,615; 10,672 paid; sell out)

It was prior to this show Vince McMahon told WWF World Champion Bret Hart he wouldn't be able to afford Hart's new 20-year contract; the show was originally announced as a house show for Sept. 13 but was moved to this date for the Raw TV taping
The Brooklyn Brawler won a 20-man battle royal to earn a world title shot during the Nov. 15 return date; other participants included: Los Boricuas, DOA, the Truth Commission, Brian Christopher, Scott Taylor, the Headbangers, and Blackjack Windham & Blackjack Bradshaw, among others.

WWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - November 15, 1997 (matinee) (15,479; 12,525 paid)

Prior to Bret Hart's leaving the WWF, the main event was scheduled to be a title defense for Hart pitting him against the Undertaker, Steve Austin, and Shawn Michaels in a four-way match; also originally scheduled was WWF Tag Team Champions the Legion of Doom vs. Owen Hart & Davey Boy Smith, Vader (w/ George Steele) vs. Triple H, and Dude Love vs. Miguel Perez Jr.; Bret, Smith, and Owen did not appear as advertised but no refunds were offered; included an in-ring promo by Goldust in which he said he "dumped the bitch" (Marlena), said the cast on his hand was her fault, admitted to wearing women's panties and told the men in the crowd to seek their feminine side

WWF World Champion & WWF European Champion Shawn Michaels pinned the Brooklyn Brawler at the 15-minute mark with the superkick after interference from Chyna and distraction from Triple H; Brawler came to the ring to the tune of Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York"

Shawn Michaels wrestled twice that night. Him versus the Brawler was a mid-card match. He tagged with HHH against Austin & The Undertaker in the main.

EDIT: Sorry about the font going funny.
