Documentary Thread #2

I just got through Central Park Five on Netflix. Christ, what an appalling story of NYPD incompetence and racial profiling, with a dose of media hurricane mixed in. It's happened entirely within my lifetime and I'm disgusted that I hadn't heard of it before.

It's a gripping watch. It also has the mark of a great documentary where you spend two hours afterwards trawling Wikipedia for related articles.

(World in Action) I've been bingeing on them on youtube. Mainly ones on racism and fascism

Yeah, so have I. I love the way the programme always ends on a downer.

Combat 18 (first part) ends with the racist scroat threatening to put a bullet in (a reporter looking like) JNLister's head. Goes straight from that to the tremendous music theme. It's brutal.

"World in Action" - Dunblane is absolutely heartbreaking. Worst, most evil thing to ever happen in Britain that tragedy.

Most people remember "World in Action" for the IRA programmes. Somebody went undercover in one and it ended up being made into the series "Harry's Game".

You need to watch 'On Death Row' too which is like a sister piece to Into The Abyss.

IMDB lists it as having 8 episodes, but i always thought there were 3?

Thanks, I'll check those out. My Herzog wankfest has reminded me that it's just past the 10 year anniversary of the release of Grizzly Man.

Awesome, wasn't even aware of On Death Row. Will have to check it out asap.

Decline of Western Civilisation is getting a box set release at the end of the month, pretty excited for it. Part 3 has been impossible to get a decent copy of as far as I can tell, so will be a treat to have it on blu-ray

If you end up liking On Death Row there was a good 3 part series on BBC3 (no seriously) called Life and Death Row from last year.

On Herzog docs Wings of Hope and Little Dieter Needs to Fly are both excellent

The story of Juliane Koepcke who was the only survivor of a plane crash in the peruvian jungle. a flight Herzog was supposed to be on.

Little Dieter Needs to Fly is the true story behind Rescue Dawn. Dieter Dengler is taken back to Vietnam where he was a POW and relives & recreates his capture, his days as a prisoner and his escape.

Watched quite a few docs this year.

Tales of the Grim Sleeper: Nick Broomfield visits South Central LA to investigate The Grim Sleeper serial killer.

Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop

Requiem for the Dead: American Spring. it looks at spring of last year where 8,000+ people died due to gun violence using just news reports and postings on social media.

Also watched The Nightmare which looks at & then recreates peoples nightmares. Sounded interesting but as dull as ditchwater.

Do anyone rate American Experience?

The 'New York - A Documentary Film' series by Ric Burns is phenomenal. It's about 8 parts and lasts over 16 hours. It's brilliant night shift audio stuff for me, information out the wazoo.

Watched a great doc about possibly the most corrupt cop in NYPD history the other night. Lad was a born criminal who somehow made it onto the job. Great stories, and cool footage of the hell hole that some areas of NY seemed to be back in the 80's.

HBO have put out a new Springsteen documentary, The Ties That Bind, which looks at the making of The River. Pretty much an hour-long chat with him intertwined with old footage and live snippets. It's not quite on the level of The Promise, but it's still pretty great.
