That's the weekend sorted whilst the wife is away.

 

Anyone know anything or seen or heard anything about Michael Moores latest? To be honest I like most of his movies and lived TV Nation so always of interest to hear opinions on him.

I watched a documentary on Netflix called When Jews were funny, it was basically a discussion on Jewish identity in comedy.

 

The main points were; are Jewish people inherently funny, where does the humour come from and is Jewish humour still the same as it used to be?

Some of the talking heads were cracking jokes and being witty and it was interesting and funny enough in parts.

 

Unfortunately the filmmaker was so terrible that he seemed to have no idea what he actually wanted to say, he was really annoying and a good few of the talking heads got snappy and asked him what the fuck he was talking about.

If you want to see a guy ask a rambling incomprehensible question about Jewish identity to a confused barely sentient 100 year old grumpy Jewish comedian it's the film for you.

 

Marty Funhauser from Curb your enthusiasm was one of the people interviewed, it was cool seeing him.

I don't want to generalise and am on phone trying to look after the kids so quick reply, but doesn't it come from there having been so much oppression to the Jewish people, that they've had to come through adversity for centuries and the humour is a defiance to that, something to elevate above the shit?

 

Plus, there is so much culture and history to riff on.

That's probrably not far off. Look at most of Larry David's stuff, nothing good ever happens, but funny as hell.

 

Must give this a watch, cheers.

NOT SAFE FOR WORK! just to be sure. Two versions exist on Youtube, the gore is pixelated in one and not another..

I can't recommend this documentary highly enough. It's under half an hour long, go watch it now. It follows a New York defense lawyer who's likened to Saul from Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul but that's irrelevant. Vice fell off for a while but they're back on form with this. A truly mesmerising personality and story. All the presence of a movie star. I couldn't help but think how well he'd do working in pro wrestling.

I like Vice in general but i find their documentaries hit and miss based purely on the host of the actual films, some of them are unbearable.

 

Any other Vice recommendations though?

The Vice owned youtube channel called Munchies is generally pretty good for food related stuff. Action Bronson's Fuck that's delicious, and the Munchies guide to ..."insert geographical area here" are always a good watch.

The ESPN 30 for 30 documentaries are so good that I'm now watching (and enjoying) them about sports which I have no interest in.

 

 

KINGS RANSOM is all about the Summer of 1988 when the Edmonton Oilers sold Wayne Gretzky - the greatest ice hockey player who ever lived - to the LA Kings out of the blue when he was still in his prime.

 

What made this story not-so-straightforward were many different viewpoints and factors which made this come about.

The Edmonton Oilers owner wanted to plan for the future, their Coach was dead against Gretzkey leaving, the fans idolised him, then they turned on him believing his Hollywood movie star wife was making him head South, the LA Kings owner was only asking about Gretzky as a cheeky shot in the dark, and more.

 

Very interesting story condensed into just 50 minutes.

I haven't seen many of them, but I did see the one about the Oakland Raiders move to LA and back. Mostly because it was partly about the rise of gangster rap on the west coast and how the Kings and Lakers who both wore gold and purple. Then the Kings brought in Gretzky and they changed to black and silver the same as the Raiders. Because of the popularity of the Raiders' merchandise.
