Paid Members Egg Shen Posted December 16, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted December 16, 2017 anyone given the new Glassjaw album a go yet? im yet to bust it out but im feeling some reservation. Im hearing good things about it but Glassjaw sit in that weird category for me where i genuinely loved the first record when it came out, id never heard anything like it. Then the second album dropped (which i could never get into), emo/myspace exploded and Glassjaw were sort of adopted as a figurehead of that scene and became a band that that scene of people claimed to like for their status rather than their actual music (didnt help that Head Automatica's Beating Heart Baby was some emo-side bar anthem). So my interest maybe unfairly subsided, and then they appear to have dicked about for the last 15 years (i did see them in 08 though and they wasn't massively impressive) which was equally frustrating as it was creating a mystique around the band. Any thoughts?
lightningxlock
Couldn't agree more with that, Ebb. I've only listened to about half of it, which is astonishing given how long I've waited for it (since the first album, like yourself). What I've heard of it is fine but it's certainly not the AOTY some are saying it is. The fact that I only bothered to listen to half of it says a lot. It's pretty damn messy. The vocals seem smothered and drowned out by the music. One thing I always appreciated about Glassjaw was the interesting melodies in the vocals and there doesn't really appear to be many on this. I was also one of those left disappointed in 2010 when I finally got to see them. I saw them again last year supporting Coheed and Cambria and Coheed wiped the floor with them.
Paid Members Egg Shen Posted December 16, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted December 16, 2017 Coheed & Cambria is another band that was initially got lumped in that scene, they've brilliantly managed to outgrow it and stay relevant though.
wordsfromlee
The last 3 tracks on the new Glassjaw record are brilliant. Everything else is just alright. I started to fall out of love with them a bit after I saw them play Worship & Tribute in full at Hevy fest. They played John Fucking Lennon instead of Cosmopolitan Bloodloss and because they spent so long before the set moaning about their backline, they only got to play about 7 songs from the album and ended with a track off the first one. It was very weird and not that great.

It's not going to reinvent the wheel but then it was never expected to. I've never been the biggest Quicksand fan, despite Manic Compression being excellent, and will always believe that United by Fate by Rival Schools is the best thing that Schreifels will ever do. Echo the sentiments about Glassjaw. For all intents and purposes I should love them. I was 15/16 when they exploded onto the (my) scene, were critically acclaimed, and bang out exactly the music that I love. So it's weird that they have never connected with me. (See also ATDI. Yeah, you can wank over RoC, but we all know their best stuff was their poppier songs on Vaya) The new album is alright, but I don't think I'll be revisiting it any time soon. The drums sound bloody awful. Is anything else significant coming out this year as I'm keen to see some Top 10 AOTY lists, but as mine contain a few non-rock albums, wondered whether it would be OK for here or another thread? Paid Members Egg Shen Posted December 20, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted December 20, 2017 Album of the year lists are starting to pop up everywhere, anyone here wanna put their favorites over? Ive genuinely listened to less new music this year than i have in each of the last 20 (i blame podcasts), so i don't really have a definitive number 1 myself. I have gone out and purchased a bunch of albums based off the strength of them appearing in several 'top album' lists. Ive got some catching up to do. Warporn Industries - Warporn Industries 8. Rozwell Kid - Precious Art 9. Mastodon - Emperor of Sand 10. Gnarwolves - Outsiders I've heard loads more but whittled it down to these 10. Anyone who likes Cancer Bats should check out 'Get The Shot'. If you like Mastodon I'd recommend the debut album from 'Hyborian' too.
Merzbow
I don't really have an order here, it's a list I made for somewhere else of amazing releases that may have not have had much coverage this year. SuperBacon
I know this is now fairly redundant but there was so much good music that came out in 2017 that I have to put some albums in a list. If anything, maybe people can have a listen to something they weren't aware of. Anyway I know its a rock/metal/punk thread but I have a couple of outside the genres as we don't have a general music thread. There is no order to these apart from Number 1. 10.) Keeno-All The Shimmering Things-Incredible atmospheric Drum & Bass from classically trained producer. The bass on Jungle Ballet might make you poo yourself. 9.) Tigers Jaw-spin- Lo-fi indie rock from duo. Really pretty album made for autumn/winter 8.) Dryjacket-For Posterity- Like the twiddly/math mid west emo revival? Come on in. Really grown up rock music 7.) Free Throw-Bear Your Mind- See above. Extra props for writing a song about male body dysmorphia 6.) Oddisee-The Iceberg- Intelligent, jazzy, thoughtful hip hop from one of my favourite in the genre 5.) Prawn-Run Just great, chuggy, positive emo 4.) Bear Trade-Silent Unspeakable-Straightforward gruff punk from the North (Sunderland I think). Sexy Beast samples the film, and is a banger. Sadly just called it a day 3.) Enter Shikari-The Spark-My favourite band of all time, of course they're on here 2.) Julien Baker-Turn Out The Lights-The most beautiful thing in music right now 1.) The Menzingers-After The Party-Genuinely a Top 10 album of all time for me. Just a sublime listen Mentions to Code Orange, Wolves In The Throne Room, Converge, Jehst, Leaf Dog, Verb T and Pitchy 92, The World Is A Beautiful Place, Iron Chic, Can't Swim, Pet Symmetry, Pet Library, Paramore, Stray From The Path, Movements, Counterparts, and I'm sure I'm forgetting loads more. What a year for good music. What are we all looking forward to this year? For me, it's got to be the new Tiny Moving Parts and The Wonder Years albums, and maybe, just maybe, Deftones will bless us all with something. It's them or Weezer. Â

I'd love it & I think Brian Fallon will be there but seeing as Fallon has already been announced for some Euro fests solo I don't think it'll happen this year. From looking at who's around Europe at the time of 2000 Trees I reckon it'll be out of - At The Drive In, The Offspring, Bad Religion, Alice In Chains, The Descendants & (at a push although I think they're too big) Deftones. If Gaslight get announced for some Euro fests then it's on.

wordsfromlee
A lot of people thought it was going to be Weezer last year but it ended up being Nothing But Thieves. The Decendants could do it as they headlined Hevy in 2012 but they don't seem like the kind of band that 2000 Trees would get to headline. I hope the new Distillers stuff is good. I wasn't a fan of Coral Fang. I preferred it when Tim Armstrong wrote their songs. Both Spinnerette and Brody's solo album were average at best.
