Wrestlers do the stupidest things

Not sure where else to put this, so figured might as well start a new topic because eesh, the Jake Hager thing.

If you haven't seen it, he's pulled a Rey Mysterio at SlapFight, where he got slapped so hard he started bleeding from the ear and the eye, and has now had to go under emergency surgery. Apparently Dana White has said it's the worst injury he's seen in all his time in UFC, and as much of a cunt as he is, he's seen a lot.

I've put the picture in spoiler, not so much because it's outrageously gory, but because it just invokes understandable squeamishness.

I mean, PowerSlap is a stupid idea anyway, but Jake has to take some kind of prize for stupidity just for his career choice now being to let people hit him so hard in the face that his eye pops a bit.

As someone who hasn't been following much of this at all, is it likely to be banned at some point?

I don't think it'll be banned. It seems to have surged in popularity like the sport where two guys run at each other trying to stop the other one in a head on rugby tackle. Seems like new sports for those where concussion is a badge of honor. 

It's an unfortunate injury from what wasn't even deemed an illegal eye poke, but if that's the case a freak accident if anything. But yeah if we're still having UFC and Boxing throw haymakers and heavy hits, somehow someone will defend getting bitch slapped is safer.

I was wondering why he's even doing it. Surely he's not skint and PowerSlap can't pay that much can it (I'm sure he's one of the better paid ones) at least not enough to make it worth doing if you're already worth money or can probably earn a reasonable living doing a handful of indy dates and autograph signings.

Actually surprised WWE never got Swagger and Dutch back, would be right up the current owners street. Maybe he's doing this idiotic slapping craic to try and keep his name out there or he's really bad with money.

Is it just me or is it like the internet didn't happen? I can imagine that slapping game in Memphis or somewhere backwards in the 70s, surely nowadays anyone could look up the risks and see it's ridiculously stupid?

The plus side is the people doing that aren't exactly adding much to society

It stands to reason that despite somehow making it out of pro-wrestling relatively wealthy and unscathed, Hager would still sign up for something this dumb and get himself catastrophically injured.

He strikes me as one of the stupidest wrestlers of all time, and think of the ground that covers.

Genuinely surprised he hasn’t put out a social media post blaming Tony Khan for this injury.

they've had a few non Powerslap branded powerslap tournaments in town here for a few years and from what ive seen the audience for it is largely weed/balloon dealers

I read somewhere they get about 10k per contest with the winner getting a bonus. I'm sure whether or not 10k is enough to stand there like a wally and let someone give you a concussion is a judgement call that differs from person to person.

I’m not a fan of combat sports in general, but I’m genuinely baffled as to what the entertainment value of this is for anyone. It’s obviously dangerous and stupid, but in the most boring possible way.

I've seen a couple of Power Slap videos that were fed to me on Instagram. The most horrendous bit to me is seeing their bodies tense up as they hit the floor. It's mad how willing they are to do it considering how blatantly stupid it is.

And thats coming from someone who played a game called Danger Can with his mates in his youth. It involved smashing a can of beer on your forehead and if it bursts you get down on one knee, neck it and then sing the line "my 13-month old baby" from 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder for some reason. One time we considered upping it to Danger Keg which was going to be a 5L mini keg and a motorbike helmet but even we could see that it was a bad idea.

Not a fan either but I can understand watching two people try and suss each other out and try and get get past their defence etc. This is just two people taking turns at hitting, I really don't get it.
