What do you miss?

Feeling like people are, in the majority, good, kind, and compassionate, and that the world is still a beautiful place despite all the horrors perpetrated on a regular basis.

I would give a lot to be able to feel that way again, but it feels far away, and beyond reach these days.

I miss not being overwhelmed by life and everything.

Not i want to be naive and ignorant per se, but life does feel a lot heavier with the Internet and constant access to everything everywhere.

Not sure how to word it without sounding like a completely selfish prick but sometimes it's just a lot. I think because I do consider myself to be a caring and empathetic person and so there's just so many battles to be fought and so much desire to help everyone on top of trying to live your own life.

I think it's important to remember that our nervous systems are not made for the sheer onslaught of information we are exposed to on the internet, the on-going destruction of humanity that we are watching literally as it happeneds is not how the human body was designed to absorb information. Your reaction and feelings at being exposed to it are absolutely normal and probably the way most of us are feeling @DavidB6937. Feeling that way actually shows that you are emotionally intelligent, it's those that are exposed to it and take it in their stride that we need to be worried about.

The names of them are lost to me, but Ceefax and Teletext had proto message boards in their TV sections that I would read every day, and had a few messages get on the Ceefax one. The Teletext one was super niche and in-jokey and I was a little bit scared by it.

The Mega- Zine? I used to read that too, in fact there was about 10 pages in that range of numbers and I used to read them all. There was a more serious music one on Channel 4 Teletext call the Vibe I think? Possibly the Ceefax one was called The Buzz? Might have made that up

I miss the world not having social media where everyone can be anything they want, be it a bully, conspiracy nut, gaslighter or just a generally awful person. I miss the days where we weren’t bombarded with information and could at least have a reasonable amount of trust in what made it to the mainstream news, given that it would have at least been met with some level of scrutiny rather than just posted by some bloke on Facebook.

I also miss people giving a shit about each other and playing 4-player Dreamcast games with my mates, all sat cross-legged on the floor next to each other.

Edit: I always remember reading the problem pages on Teletext and it always had some poor lad who’d written in about his crooked chode and the agony uncle pushing his book “Living with a penis”. Halcyon days.

One of the Ceefax ones was called Backchat. (IIRC). There was another one that had a similar target demographic but I can’t remember the name. Also on Ceefax, but fairly short lived, “it makes me mad”, which was just daily mail readers writing in to complain about the usual white people shit.

Delving further into the recesses of my mind, I *think* the Ceefax one I read the most was called Chatterbox, but The Buzz rings a bell as well.

Backchat!! That was it. I think I just made The Buzz up.... Planet Sound was the music pages on Channel 4 Teletext. It was on their news pages that I found out that Tupac had died.

I'm going to go against the "pre-social media" comments and say I miss early social media. That 2004-2010ish period before it all got corrupted and was a great way to find people who had the same interests as yourself and lived in the same area.

I met so many people who I'm still friends with today during that time. Nowadays it's way more difficult to interact with people in a genuine way.

This mirrors my experience really. It's safe to say I wouldn't have the friends I do now or my family if it wasn't for the Internet and being able to find like minded people. It allowed an incredibly shy and introverted person the opportunity to feel more comfortable in himself.

I think it was an introverts dream and a great way of 'finding your tribe'. I really wish that forums were still more of a thing. They kind of gave way to social media and I preferred forums

One thing I miss is going to a newsagent and seeing all the magazines there. 

When I was about 15/16 I can remember walking to a fairly big newsagent, which isn’t too far away from where I live now. The magazine section was the entire length of the shop and spending ages looking at all the magazines and ended up buying the magazines I used to buy frequently, Edge Magazine, OPM, PWI, Powerslam, FHM and the occasional edition of Loaded, depending on who was on the front and if I fancied them or not

I remember last year I went into the same shop and the magazine section is now two shelves about 20 inches wide and just TV Choice style magazines, a sorry state of affairs.
