Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted August 1, 2025 Paid Members Posted August 1, 2025 I'm sure we had a topic like this before, but I'm buggered if I can find it. What weird, odd or just downright bizarre things do you do in day-to-day life? This came to mind last night. I've got a chair in the corner of my room for the sole purpose of watching films on. So I'll happily sit on the sofa/armchair/any other seat of choice when eating my dinner or watching telly or whatever, but if I put a film on at home then I prefer to be sat in this one specific chair. That's not the odd thing, however. Everytime I pull the chair out into the middle of the room (for optimal view of the TV) I do an accompanying little song, where I go 'movie chair, movie chair' to the tune of the Spider-Man theme, finishing with 'look out! Time for the movie chair!' I can't remember how or why this started but I've done it so often now that it just feels right. I also have a little piece of string that I take with me everywhere, I'm pretty sure this is a social anxiety / comfort-blanket kind of thing though as I find myself twiddling and playing with it when I'm talking to strangers/in new places/etc. What weird stuff do you do? Make me feel a little less insane, please. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 If I'm a passenger in a car, I always look out of the window and count the cats eyes. I have no idea when it started. When I was younger I also did a weird variation where my eyes would follow the cats eyes but if there was a large gap my eyes would bounce' and look in the air until another one appeared. ... yeah, I think I've succeeded in making you look less insane. Just polite innit? Quote
wordsfromlee Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 Each night I say "sweet dreams, custard creams" to the dog as I give him a biscuit at bedtime. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 Oh, and I used to think if I didn't turn my pillow over before I went to sleep then my parents would die. .. no, I don't know either. Quote

Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted August 1, 2025 Moderators Posted August 1, 2025 I really want to know what the movie chair looks like @Lorne Malvo. In my head is a really uncomfortable wooden chair, for the serious pursuit of studying cinema. Because if it was a nice chair why wouldn't you use it the rest of the time? Quote
The Gaffer Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 I empathy transfer on to inanimate objects. Particularly if there's a sense of one being 'left out'. The two that come to mind are picking which pillow to keep on the bed to sleep on and picking which tea bag to use if I've pulled out two that are connected. I will - I swear - apologise to the one I'm not using via intoning a little "Your time will come, don't worry!" to it in my head. Quote

It's a semi-comfortable armchair. I used to watch films on the sofa but when work was massively busy and I came home spent, I'd probably get 10 minutes into a film before inevitably dozing off. So I had to find a chair that was comfotable enough to sit on but not quite comfortable enough to fall asleep on. Hope this helps ? Quote
Dr. Alan Grant Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 I push doors open either with my foot, the sleeve of the shirt I’m wearing or my shoulder. I cannot push a door open with my hands anymore. Started during Covid when everyone was paranoid and washing their hands every two minutes. If I’m in a public bathroom, I pray that they have motion activated taps and dryers cause I’ll be extremely anxious otherwise. I also despise shaking someone’s hand and will only do so if they stick theirs out first with a hopeful expression on their face. I don’t like mixing my food in one mouthful. So to use a fry up as an example, I’ll have a forkful of beans. Then some sausage. A bit of bacon. Never will I scoop two different foodstuffs onto a fork. One thing at a time please. I’m a big comic book reader and I will make sound effects constantly when reading. Explosions, punches etc. Never loudly, just to myself. I have no idea why. Quote

She said it was her comfort blanket so it’s definitely that. She also told me she knows lots of people with anxiety who have a ‘token’ they touch when worked up. Made me realise that when I flip my phone between my thumb and index finger, it’s when I’m anxious. I always say goodbye to the cat when I’m leaving the house and tell her to be good. I even give her a kiss on top of her head. Quote
Paid Members FLips Posted August 1, 2025 Paid Members Posted August 1, 2025 I can’t settle in bed unless I go for a wee, brush my teeth, moisturise, blow my nose, put some deodorant on, and drink some water. Usually in that order and I need to do all of them. If I recently went for a wee I’ll just go again and get what I can out, and if my nose is clear I still need to blow it or my nose will start feeling like it has bogies in it as soon as I get into bed. I have no routine for when I wake up, however. Quote
The King Of Swing Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 I still use the same piece of paper, that my late father folded up into a makeshift bookmarker. He just randomly did it one day, as I was reading a book. He passed away over 20 years ago. I won't use anything else. Quote

I'll share what happens most times for me: stretch legs, crack both my knees, possibly fart, finger in the left ear to crack my jaw one side, finger behind the right ear to crack my jaw the other side, get up, go for a piss or shit, wash hands, blow nose, take tablets. Glamorous, hey? Quote
westlondonmist Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 I for some reason have the collar of my tee in my mouth. I've wrecked so many tees doing it and I don't know why. I have to concentrate really hard to not do it on teams calls. Maybe a stress thing, maybe just sensory, I need something in my hands otherwise I feel bored or uncomfortable and I move my feet alot. Weird and no fucking clue why. Quote
