Whilst i would never use the term 'mid card scrub', that term perfectly describes my favorite type of wrestler.

Skinner will always be mine, I thought he was brilliant. He also had the coolest Hasbro (which is probably a big reason why i loved him). 

Kronic also, I loved them, even their terrible wwe work. (again cool action figures)

And whilst he had a very respectable career, The Mountie feels like he fits in here well.

The wwecw December to Dismember PPV is essentially a celebration of 'mid card is the ceiling' wrestling, I loved that dvd back in the day, thinking about it might put it on this weekend instead of watching Summerslam pre show, will be far more entertaining.

Lenny Lane

He arguably overachieved just by being given a lower midcard spot in WCW but there was just something about him and his dorky yet slightly problematic gay gimmick with Lodi, a fourth rate Chris Jericho but I'd still rather see him on TV than old Jan 6th-er.

You can probably throw Lodi in there too, actually. I didn't know his Flock gimmick was just ripping off Sign Guy Dudley and loved it.

WCW was always giving shitters a chance to shine, if only briefly despite not being very good.

Another one that dropped into my head was Perry Saturn in WWF in 2000 and 2001. Can't remember him having any great matches but I always loved the guy, looked like an absolute psycho. I think I even made him champion in Smackdown 2. Absolute midcard fodder when not with the Radicalz and a staple of my Heat only viewing

I remember being very invested in his “you’re welcome”/ Moppy mental breakdown angle. Bastard Raven put her through a shredder! I think that was the last time Saturn got a PPV match too.

It was a good character! I remember all my mates loved it at the time. And Saturn is such a weird and awkward guy that it really worked.

One of mine which I don't think has been mentioned yet - Ryback. I love that big, stupid goon. It's a shame that those insufferable fucking Goldberg chants seemed to derail him. Yeah he was clumsy, goofy and you'd be unlikely to get a good match out of him but I loved him. He was big, mental and did loads of cool power moves and that's what wrestling is all about.

Everyone loves Steve McMichael now I think, but I have been a big fan for a long time. In the vein of big clumsy cloggers who are compelling because everything they do looks like it's going to fall apart and hurt someone (Ahmed, Goldberg etc). Can you believe they gave him a tombstone as a finisher and to my knowledge he never killed anyone? Very likable guy, even though he commentary was a bit shit.

There was a guy in our class in school who scratched pretty much the entire 2000 roster on to the front page of his year journal and Perry Saturn got the big, prominent spot in the centre which I always found peculiar at the time. We were all into wrestling but there'd always be one person who was like "Rock or Triple H? Nah, ______ is my guy" and Perry Saturn was very much his guy.

I was that one person a lot of the time. Usually because I only had Sky One so Metal was my show and that gave me affection for low-carders who never made Raw or SmackDown*. Just Joe, Julio Fantastico, Essa Rios, Arch Kincaid, pre-TNA jobber Bobby Roode ... these were my guys.

 

 

*I know Smackers was on Sky One too, but not on a Sunday. Sunday was Metal day.

Saturn wasn't shit, though. He wasn't amazing, but he had a great look, good athleticism, and none of his matches were particularly boring, even if they didn't stand out. Solid midard fun for me.

I liked Ryback for the most part, but that finisher was just dogshit. A glorified Angle Slam for a power guy makes no sense. At least with Cena and Goldberg there was an element of using their strength to hoist the opponent up further or angling him for maximum kayfabe impact.
