I can't explain it, I'm fully aware he was not the best in-ring and he was on SmackDown at one of that show's low points. But damn it, I thought Heidenreich was great. There was just something about him. Dan Fitch even brought him over for a show in Newcastle on the night of WrestleMania 23. I absolutely cannot remember who he wrestled. But it was Heidenreich on the indies! The Assassin. And then Mad Man Manson a few days later. Quote

Joe Blog Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 No way is Billy Gunn being classed as shit when Albert has been put on some sort of podium. Quote

In fairness, it was one specific stage of him - maybe that's one of the limitations of a thread like this. Perhaps it would be better to view specific wrestlers' gimmicks as entirely different entities from the ones before or after them? Like JLM said, there's love for Albert and A-Train, but nobody looks back on Tensai with any fondness. Also haven't heard much in either direction about his work in Japan as Giant Bernard - would have thought there would still be enough puro fans on here to provide some insight. Billy Gunn was brill in various forms - his NAO work being unquestionable - such as Mr. Ass, and in his tag-team with Chuck, and he seems to be enjoying an Indian summer in AEW, but as "The One", and, oddly, in the Voodoo Kin Mafia, he was just not watchable. A solid midcard feud based around one guy using a shin-guard to cheat (so reliant on it is he that he names it), and the other using his own to counter it (and, to piss off the villain, names his). An absolute classic of booking - give the fans a storyline to get invested in, without needing to be the main event or around a title. I didn't know much about Garvin outside that feud, though - wasn't he quite over? Quote

Reminded by this from Supremo elsewhere, I always bloody loved Test. I think it was mostly because I loved all his many finishers - the surprisingly good top rope elbow, a decent go at what is now best known as Cross Rhodes, that pumphandle slam thing and best of all, that running big boot that knocked people TFO. He was so influential on me that my CAW of myself on Day of Reckoning had top rope elbow, Test Drive & running big boot as its/my finishers. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted July 31, 2024 Paid Members Posted July 31, 2024 I reckon Shane O’Mac might be the walking definition of this thread. Demonstrably un-athletic and completely uncoordinated. Always having to rely on every short cut and cheat code possible, some of the worst punches in the history of the business, but there’s no denying how much fun he could be. Against Test at Summerslam. Against Kurt Angle at King of the Ring. Some brilliantly daft bumps from the top of the Titan Tron and Hell in a Cell. Stealing the Van Terminator. Introducing the world to the Mean Street Posse. Generated some real heel heat as the dickhead nepo baby. Took a fantastic bump off the Stunner too, spitting beer everywhere. Even as late as 2019, that Shane/Drew vs. Undertaker/Roman tag match from Extreme Rules is ridiculously good. Undertaker’s last good match. He might be the best worst wrestler of all time. Sign him, Tony! Here comes the monaaaaay. Quote

Tim Healys Chutney Spoon Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 The Outrunners. They have that classic 80s tag-team look about them and they seem reasonable enough in the ring. They just have that something that I think 'yeah I like them, even though they are crap' Quote

In that context, they're absolutely brilliant! Quote

He was so influential on me that my CAW of myself on Day of Reckoning had top rope elbow, Test Drive & running big boot as its/my finishers. I think Test probably is the best example for this thread. He was a lot like Matt Morgan, in that he seemingly had almost everything you needed to do well in modern pro wrestling, but could never put it all together (unlike Morgan, though, he didn't have much of a clue on the mike). That big boot was probably the best in the business, and I always remember that reverse F5 thing he did that was listed in the Smackdown games as "Test neckbreaker". And his gutwrench diving powerbomb was pretty good too. One thing I found odd was that, despite not using it for very long, that spinning cutter was known for a long time as the Testdrive - but it was no more successful in getting over for Test than anyone else who used it! Prior to Cody finally getting it over, of course. 15 hours ago, Supremo said: I reckon Shane O’Mac might be the walking definition of this thread. Sign him, Tony! Here comes the monaaaaay. See, I want to agree, but how many people do you know who can pull off a shooting star press? Shane was a weird one - he seemed to be athletic in ways that weren't conducive to being a good wrestler, like he was training for all the wrong things. And let's not forget how much of a heat killer he was as the first feud for the newly-unmasked, extra-psychotic Kane, or for finally-found-his-stride, resurgent main-event villain Randy Orton. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted August 1, 2024 Paid Members Posted August 1, 2024 (edited) Shane was really great as a little shit heel in 98-2000. He played that role perfectly and always had good matches (mainly because they played to his strengths - being cocky yet cowardly and taking massive bumps). Once wrestlers were expected to actually sell for him it all fell apart. Like in that match with Kurt where Shane suplexed Kurt on the floor...the idea that Shane McMahon could suplex a Olympic Gold medal wrestler was just ridiculous. I'll always have a soft spot for Test. He was one of my faves in 99 - that Shane/Stephanie story really got him over. Outside of the Shane match I can't remember him having a good singles match but he had loads of really fucking cool moves in a time period where most wrestlers just punched and kicked their way through matches and that was enough for 11 year old LaGoosh. T&A were a big powerhouse team who in a different era or promotion could have really got over and had a strong run but in 2000 WWF were just second fiddle to Trish. I also really enjoyed his brief heel run in Autumn 2001 where it seemed like he was starting to put the pieces together but it just never really happened for him.
