I made the mistake of discovering that my uni laptop runs Steam and Train Simulator Classic.

A long shot, I know, but I can't get A Hat in Time to work on my Steam Deck. All I get is as far as the spinning Steam logo and it won't go any further than that. Any advice that doesn't require a masters degree in computer engineering to understand?

How long did you leave it doing that? I've heard from people that it can spend 5-10mins just sat on that screen the first time you boot it up while it's compiling shaders in the background.

If you haven't, I'd try just booting it up and wandering away for a bit and seeing if it sorts itself out.

I've left it for a good 5 minutes, I think, but I could stick it on for longer and see what happens. Cheers!

Also check if the game needs a certain version of Proton to run.

Go to the game in your library, select Settings (cog icon) > Properties > Compatibility, tick "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool," and select the desired version from the dropdown menu.

I actually tried that last weekend (your explanation there was 10 times simpler than the ones I saw on Steam) and it didn't work, sadly.

However, I left it sitting for about half an hour this morning and it eventually booted up. So that's my weekend sorted. Thanks lads!

I've been looking into how to set up RetroArch again this morning. Somebody please talk me out of this for the sake of my mental health and the state of my Steam Deck.

I've been nearly buying one for 5 months now... first they were out of stock, now the prices are insane. Scratched off my list for sure.

The heavy assumption is that everything else similar is about to start going up in price as well due to the RAM shortages.

To be fair, the price on these and the standard ones haven't increased at all since their release, have they? And the refurb oled ones last about 10 minutes when they become available, so there's definitely a demand for them.

I bought the standard version one at the end of last year for 270, as there was an assumption for ages that the big price increase was coming. No idea why someone would spend all that extra for the 1TB, as a good quality memory card costs far less and does the same thing.

It does seem that my current xbox series x will be my final new gen console if this carrys on

Think I'll stick to my xbox 360 and buy a retro console instead from now on

At this point, if budget is a concern, you could probably trade in the Series X for a Switch 2, giving you access to a plethora of great Nintendo games, and some very good ports of current gen titles. Street Fighter VI, Resident Evil Requiem, Indiana Jones, Pragmata, Assassins Creed Shadows, Star Wars Outlaws and Cyberpunk play astoundingly well on the console, and while there are compromises, I didn’t notice them at all. I completed Cyberpunk on PS5, and I didn’t think of the Switch version as lesser in any way while I was playing it, although, like I say, I’m sure compromises were made in the visuals etc.

If you wanted to upgrade, that’s probably what I’d suggest. Heck, being able to play Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom and Pokopia alone could see you out until the end of the year as far as quality gaming goes.

You might miss out on titles like GTA VI, but I’d be more surprised if it didn’t get a Switch 2 port at some point than if it did.

If they can get that Thomas The Tank Engine game running on it in some capacity they'll be able to get some form of GTA VI running on it. I bet the online would be dog mess though.

Trawled though about six pages of Off Topic looking for a suitable place to ask this - my son (12) is showing an interest in Steam, initially for some retro gaming (the recent Sonic/Fortnite collab has reignited his love for those games) but I’m sure that’ll inevitably lead elsewhere - that said, Steam Decks seem FUCKING PRICEY to put it the only way I can think how.

Anyone have any thoughts/advice in terms of dipping the proverbial toe here? I’m torn between a deck largely because of the cost, or going for maybe a laptop in that he could do other things on it, but then opens the can of worms of what spec might be required etc.

So I guess my question is, any of you running and or could recommend a bargain basement Steam ready set up so I can have some sort of idea what the likely damage is going to be?

He’s got a PS5 so Fortnite and the likes are covered so it’s more - initially - a way to play those retro games but I know it’ll open Pandora’s box if/when he has the means, so would need something that can cope with something a little stronger than a 16 bit emulator - I’m brain dead when it comes to computers and the initial price of steam decks has made me wince, so I’m just wondering if there’s any suitable entry level options out there?
