I’ve recommended this one before, but at £4.19 I couldn’t ignore it. The headline here, from my perspective, is that this is one of the best platform games of the past decade. To be clear, this isn’t a Pikmin clone; it’s quite different. At £4.19, you’re getting an absolute steal, a game that’ll put a smile on your face and keep you playing until the small hours. It’s also not overly long, another point in its favour for me given how little time I have. This is a 10/10 game for me, and I’ve replayed it several times. I’m pretty certain most of you would at least like it.

For anyone looking to install FFVII mods on Steam Deck, I used this guide. It’s a bit of a faff and it took a while, but it worked with no issues for me.

There's a recent FF7 retranslation mod that's getting good feedback, it makes it closer to the original Japanese while also putting things more in line with Remake and the wider modern side games. There's also an option in it to add in a LOT of cut content no other mods really have yet, but then some of that might not be "canon" as it was likely removed for a reason.

It's only just came out in the past month I think, pretty much all I'm using now is this with a PS1 music mod and upscaled FMVs. I keep most at stock.

Don't play them on deck but the C&C remaster set of the original and red alert 1 is amazing.

 

Still plays really well, good pace and structure through the solo campaigns. There are some gripes, the pathfinding can occasionally be a bit of an arse and the rocket bike rush is overpowered, but it's small issues given how rarely both impact the main solo campaigns in 1.

Red alert can be a chore in some of the allied missions towards the end, where it's a solo character tactical mission inside a base over a genuine battle, but again small issue overall.

 

The remastered graphics and spoonfuls of bonus content are beautiful too

A few tentative recommendations, from games I bought myself this time round. Keep in mind that I’ve not completed either of them, so they could end up being awful by the time each game is over:

Flowstone Saga

£11.24, was £14.99

I can sum this up pretty easily - a JRPG, but the combat system is Tetris. If that sounds appealing to you - as it did to me - you’ll probably like this. It’s a typical JRPG, with all of the traits that come with that - outside of turn-based combat. Instead, you play Tetris - with a few unique blocks and aspects to the game compared to the traditional game. So far the story is OK, but unspectacular - but the game itself is a lot of fun. The combat can go on a bit long, but if you like Tetris you probably won’t mind. The more lines you get, the more damage you do - there’s a bit more to it than that; but so far it’s not complicated the formulae to the point it breaks it. Although I jumped right in, apparently there’s a demo available if you’re still uncertain. 

 

Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore

As the screengrab might suggest to you, this is an indie game - a 2D platformer - based on the infamous CDi Zelda games. A spiritual successor, I suppose - but they attempt to make a good game out of it; and from what I can tell so far, they’ve actually succeeded. You’ll probably want to see what the game itself looks like, so…

I’ve not played the CDi Zelda games, but this nails how it looks based on the videos I’ve seen. But it’s actually really fun. The premise may wear thin by the end, we’ll see, but at 50% off, I reckon it’s worth a purchase.

It's turned out to be very astute timing on my part to have a birthday the same week as the Steam sale.

Picked up a few things I've wanted to play for a while recently.

Thank Goodness You're Here - really wanted to play this, as I enjoyed Untitled Goose Game a lot.

Robocop: Rogue City - I'm a sucker for classic movie tie-ins, and this one does look atmospheric.

Tinykin - @RedTwoster's fault. Helpful bastard.

Forza Horizon 4 - I sometimes have a racing itch. Not often, but I recently picked up Hot Wheels as well - that's really fun, but makes me want to play something a bit more full-on. This seems to be highly regarded, so thought it'd be worth it.

Slime Rancher - Silly, short games are more my general thing, so sure thing.

Dredge - real toss-up between this and Dave the Diver, but a friend really liked it, and I do like horror sometimes.

If you can spare the cash, I’d definitely recommend Dave the Diver alongside this. It’s a great game to unwind with, and just generally a lot of fun. Weirdly, it has a few similarities to Steamworld Dig in its gameplay loop, in that you’re continually looking to upgrade to go further into the depths; and I personally find that kind of gameplay loop very addictive!

EDIT: Some absolute bangers there, @Devon Malcolm - I absolutely loved A Hat in Time, Unmetal, Door Kickers and Critter Crunch - I’m definitely keen to hear your thoughts once you get round to them.

Having purchased the Oddworld bundle, I have now discovered that some of them are included in the PS Plus subscription that I already pay for. £1 wasted. The horror. 

I’ve also just discovered that Abe’s Odyssey is actually Abe’s Oddysee. Only 20 something years too late.
