It's a squash, but Rude gives Boone pretty much the whole match and really let's him shine before the inevitable. It's less than two minutes long, granted, but you can tell how much Rude wanted his old high school buddy to look good. 

 

Good stuff. Don’t think I’ve seen that before. He took that Rude Awakening like a champ as well, looked absolutely devastating.

I've heard/read that he Boone was a nice family man who really loved wrestling. He became a ref for WCW just to stay around the business once he was done in the ring. Sad end for him, mind, dying in a car wreck while (apparently) drunk.

Haven't seen this is decades but something got me thinking about it last night. I never had a C64 but when I was a kid, my Nan's next door neighbour had a lad who had one and I remember playing this at their house. Not sure I've ever seen anyone else mention it. I thought I'd maybe dreamt it up but the memory of Randy Savage's music in it's 8-bit glory is incredibly vivid. Anyone else play this?

Love the little mention of his “reputation of putting guys out when they mess with my wife” at the start. Clearly a reference to the time he choked that kid out in a bar for trying it on with Diana, which led to him being let go by WCW and sued by the guy. I looked it up and apparently the trial for that was in 1996 so right around the time of this promo.

I've written two long posts about this over the past few days, but they have both been Cloudfire error'd into nothing. The TLDR is I had always heard about the Crush Girls vs Dump Matsumoto feud but never got round to watching a match.

I watched the great recap by Kim Justice below of it all.

 

Then started watching some of their big matches. This is my favourite so far.

Even if you don't want to watch a 40 min documentary on 80's Joshi. Just watching the match is fantastic stuff if you just want to watch some incredible wrestling infront of one of the most rabid crowds of all time. 

I thought for some reason this was some kind of very serious, workrate heavy, Japanese thing where you had to know the whole backstory to get anything out of it.

I'm sure it is better if you do know all that but it is just basically Chigusa is an incredible babyface and one of the best sellers I have ever seen. Vs Dump Matsumoto who is one of the greatest and most vicious heels of all time. Happy to kick the shit out of Chigusa, the ref, the crowd, basically anyone in her way.

I wish I had seen this properly long ago but I am glad I now have. And looking into watching more 80's and 90's Joshi. Thankfully there seems to be tons on YouTube.

Chigusa Nagayo is the best babyface this side of prime Ricky Morton, just an absolute megastar. It's hilarious when all you've heard from American wrestlers is how quiet and respectful Japanese crowds are, to hear a building full of teenage girls screaming at Beatlemania levels for their favourites, with half of them dressed either in red or in blue depending on whether Nagayo or Asuka is their favourite. There's a Crush Gals vs. Jumping Bomb Angels match where there are full-blown cheerleading squads in the audience for the Crush Gals - not professionals booked to be part of the show, just fans taking it upon themselves to do elaborate routines about their favourite wrestlers. Absolutely unmatched.

It's been one of the most surreal experiences of my time in wrestling that I've hung out with Chigusa Nagayo a couple of times; she made a couple of appearances for EVE, and I was crewing those shows, and I have an old Crush 2000 shirt from the Crush Gals reunion in GAEA, so I dug that out for the occasion. Chigusa got genuinely emotional seeing it, and realising that some random kid in England even knew who she was, let alone remembered an angle from 20 years earlier. There were four shows that weekend, and I spent most of the prep time between them getting coffee for Chigusa, and sat chatting with her while she showed me pictures of her dogs, and told me stories about other wrestlers - "Dump Matsumoto? She only win." - and when she was talking through a spot she was going to do, where she got involved in her protégé Takumi Iroha's match to do a double team spot, she turned to me and really happily said, "Crush Gals move, yes?". She's brilliant. Not just one of the best wrestlers ever, but a genuinely funny and lovely person.

Every couple of years I end up watching this again. This time it was listening to Benno & Hamflett talk about it on the latest episode of their podcast which made me revisit it.

I remember I was already counting the days until Bret’s return before this. That eight months or so he was gone felt like much longer to me at the time. But when I knew it would be Austin he’d be returning against I was even more buzzing. This segment was the moment I became completely invested and sucked into the feud though. Just magic. This and those black and white vignettes with Austin walking around some abandoned warehouse with the dogs barking and crushing fucking eggs in his hands and stuff.

Austin was doing everything to make you watch him, even when he wasn't talking. Bret was game for keeping up with him to a degree, but it took turning heel for him to drop the niceties and go for it.

Watching this random Nitro they put up today. Juvi vs Psicosis. Ultimo vs Kidman. Booker vs Regal. Goldberg. Hall. Hogan. Raven. Sting vs Savage.  

How on Earth did it all go wrong in a little over a year?
