Ginola tried to sue him for defamation or something, but wasn't successful. Fucking hell, so he did.  You knew the way that he Snitsky'd it, wouldn't take any of the blame himself and wasn't at all responsible, that he'd soon be at Liverpool. Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 19, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 19, 2018 I remember hearing something about how that was the reason for the animosity between him and Cantona at the time as well.
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted November 19, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 19, 2018 Nike and the FA were well pissed off that Eric and Ginola weren't in the Euro 96 squad. Half the advertising was built around those two, after the season they'd had in England. Those Euro 96 billboards were amazing. Proper art. I vividly remember a picture of Patrick Kluivert with "Venables - Quit now" on it. Which is funny now, considering we stuffed them.

I loved Baddiel & Skinner's 'Venables- we're shit now' post in response after the match. FFL was a wonderful sideshow to the Euros that year. Mad how France had a superb team prior to that Bulgaria game built around Cantona, Ginola & Papin and then Aime Jacquet came in and started from scratch. Best thing they've ever done. And it couldn't have turned out better for them really.

I remember Cantona getting banned for calling Henri Michel a piece of shit, in addition to the ruction with Ginola.
Paid Members PunkStep Posted November 19, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 19, 2018 The Cantona/Michel stuff happened in the late 80s, when Michel was France boss. That was years before Houllier built the France side around Cantona, then the re-boot happened under Jacquet after they failed to qualify for USA 94. Ginola never played for Michel, that was before his time (and he was called up on occasion by Jacquet, so there was no animosity there). Paid Members Carbomb Posted November 19, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 19, 2018 (edited) Fair enough. It's odd - I didn't remember Cantona ever pulling national duty while he was at United, but then I guess I just wasn't bothered about international football at the time outside the World Cups. Paid Members PunkStep Posted November 19, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 19, 2018 He was captain up until the kung-fu kick incident. By the time he returned, the team had been re-shaped without him and ultimately he lost his place to some bald guy called Zinedine. That turned out well! Daily Buzzard
Can someone explain how Euro 2020 qualifications works in regards to the Nations League?
Paid Members PunkStep Posted November 20, 2018 Paid Members Share Posted November 20, 2018 (edited) Qualifications happen as normal (10 groups, winners and runners-up qualify). There are then playoffs for the remaining 4 places to go, which are for all 16 Nations League group winners- if they haven't already qualified. If they have, then it goes to the next placed team in their respective group, and then by ranking, and so on. The playoffs will only include teams from the same league, therefore you'll have one team from each league (which means there will be an absolute whipping team from League D) qualify for the Euros. It's still not that simple, for example -  Denmark won our Tier 2 group. Denmark will qualify from their Euro Qualification group, and when they do Wales will get their place in the Nations League Euro Place Playoffs, that.s if we don;t qualify too, which with the expanded format we're likely to. Then Ireland, who are relegated, get to take our place, which was Denmark's place, in the playoff. Daily Buzzard
Does the winner of the Tier 1 Nations League final automatically qualify for Euro 2020?

There'll be a normal Euro qualifying. After that, there'll be play-offs between teams who haven't qualified based on the nations league tables.
