Just realised I will be in hospital for this, go on the 10th for surgery that day to straighten my leg from a surgery someone else fucked up last year and I doubt I will be out two days later, I have been waiting on the surgery since January to see a specialist.

I'm being positive about the results, thin Conor, Wonderboy & Joanna & Weidman win their matches, really don't have a favourite in the others, except I want to see Kennedy get crushed off Rashad but that's unlikely.

It's getting to that point now where every time I see this thread bumped I'm fearing the worst. It's so close, I'm terrified someone is going to get injured.

Don't jinx it! But yeah, I'm having the same fears.

It's such a strong card though, the only real damage to the card is if McGregor or Alvarez get injured. Even if Woodley or Joanna got injured, it would suck, but all it would do is yet again take away the opportunity to have 3 real title fights on that card.

Remember everyone was pretty underwhelmed about this card until they announced McGregor vs. Alvarez though. Conor is the gamechanger.

Everyone? The card was fucking stacked before McGregor was announced.

Look at this fucking card -

Tyron Woodley © vs. Stephen Thompson

Joanna Jędrzejczyk © vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz    [c]

Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero

Kelvin Gastelum vs. Donald Cerrone

Miesha Tate vs. Raquel Pennington

Preliminary Card (Fox Sports 1)

Frankie Edgar vs. Jeremy Stephens

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Michael Johnson

Rashad Evans vs. Tim Kennedy

Welterweight Vicente Luque vs. Belal Muhammad

Preliminary Card (UFC Fight Pass)

Jim Miller vs. Thiago Alves

Rafael Natal vs. Tim Boetsch

Liz Carmouche vs. Katlyn Chookagian

If you think that is 'underwhelming' then your expectations are massively skewed. Look at the prelims FFS, Edgar vs Stephens is a solid co-main for any normal PPV.

I agree. I'm not saying it's my personal take, just the general consensus among different forums, social media posts etc. Maybe people here weren't saying it, I don't know.

I think being the first time in NYC, in Madison Square Garden, and the battle to get legalised in the state, some were expecting some big super fight to headline. Something like Jones at heavyweight, GSP coming back, or Conor McGregor, or Ronda Rousey. Actually, I definitely remember people thinking Rousey was a cert to be on the MSG card, a year after her loss and all.

As stacked as the card is, you can't deny PPV business will be way bigger with Conor McGregor in the main event rather than Tyron Woodley.

The entire MMA media and the majority of talk on social media was complaints about the card. It wasn't the depth of the card that was the problem, it was the lack of big time feel and superstars.

You also need to remember that Weidman vs Romero &  Khabib vs Johnson was only announced just after Mcgregor vs Alvarez was officially signed. Weidman missing was especially a sore subject given he's the most popular NY fighter and was influential in MMA getting legalised in the state.

You take those 3 fights off the card and it was definitely underwhelming for the first ever UFC New York MSG show. You have to remember in the year building up to the card, all the talk was about Mcgregor, Ronda and a potential GSP return.

Yeah, all the media and fans were saying the same thing before McGregor vs. Alvarez was added - it was a good card, with loads of great fights, but it didn't feel special. It didn't feel like it lived up to the years and years of hype. It packed the superstar or special attraction that would tip it over the edge. McGregor vs. Alvarez, with the chance of Conor making history, was that fight.

The fight is at 155lbs, not 145lbs.

Conor & Eddie doing a conference call tonight think it's 9pm it's 5pm Eastern time but I don't think the US put their clocks back an hour yet, the Joanna,Karolina Woodley, Wonderboy was just finishing last night at quarter to 10 just after the Champions league had finished.

Anyone listen to the conference call? Is it worth a go?

I caught the first 5 minutes and Connor dodging the conversation about taking a break. He's never fighting at FW again, is he.

It's definitely worth a listen if you've got some spare time. It's refreshing hearing Mcgregor move away from the monetary talk of out earning his opponents, and he did so here.

Both go back and forth and I think Mcgregor is best when he meticulously breaks down how he's going to finish his opponent.
