Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted July 22 Paid Members Posted July 22 Outside of the odd stag do or weekend away to watch wrestling, I haven't had a proper holiday since 2015. I'm looking at booking up next year. I've done a bit of research the past few days and been swaying towards Skopje in North Macedonia. Has anybody ever been? Or do you have any recommendations for similar places (as in European but not too touristy / busy)? I know that doesn't narrow it down much sorry but I'm open to suggestions. Thank you! Quote

Sisi is even more beautiful, quieter, and has some incredible traditional tavernas within walking distance. But crap beaches. Quote
Rossman Posted July 22 Posted July 22 We went to Montenegro a few years ago and that was lovely. Stayed in Becici which had the resort and the beach was on the doorstep. We could walk to Budva which has an old town and castle walls to walk. Lots of bars and restaurants. Visited Kotor which is a medieval town, which has small winding, narrow streets with restaurants and shops. The old town is UNESCO protected. You can climb up the ladder of Kotor which is a hike up the mountain which has great views of the bay. It has the bay of Kotor which contains lots of boats in the harbour and sometimes cruise ships come in. There is also the fortress which wraps around the mountain which you can hike up, again it's a lot of steps. There is also a cat museum. So much to do here and see. When we went, we took a speedboat through the bay to a small coastal village called Perast. It's lovely there. Large block, sandy buildings, cocooned with the mountains looming in the background. It's the location in Casino Royale where Bond has the card game (actually filmed in Czech Republic). A lot of buildings were palaces, that have since been restored and turned into hotels. There's a little island just off the coast of Perast. Called Our Lady of the Rocks. It's big enough to have a little church on it and a prime tourist destination. There's another little island next to it, Island of St George which is a monastery but that's off limits. Perast & Kotor were under Venetian rule for 400 years, so they definitely have an Italian flavour to their architecture. There's Sveti Stefan which was close by to Becici. Famous for it's small exclusive island connected via a causeway. Novak Djokovic got married here and shut the whole area down. You can stay the night at the small hotel on the island. For two adults it's £1900 a night. The island is not open to the public for a general nose around. It's a nice walk along the beach front with restaurants and there's forests and mountains in the foreground. We bought the boat ride through Get Your Guide. Bought the bus tickets online. Most people spoke English and quite easy to get around. We flew into Dubrovnik in Croatia and then had to cross the border to Montenegro. Now they've got an airport in Tivat so a lot easier. Quote
