Direct Impact
With the recent release of Alberto Del Rio, I've seen many "gags" along the lines of "Can't wait to see Delberto Al Rio in the impact zone". Got me thinking of WWE superstars who had to change there names to wrestle in TNA. Some people are lucky to compete under there real names, or own the rights to there names or slightly different spelling to WWE names (Taz, Rhino). But some have had to completely change there names. So thought we could collaborate a list. What are good clever name changes, what are poor? Â I feel sorry for long term WWE wrestlers who had to come up with completely new names despite loyalty to WWE. Like Billy Gunn when he became "N.I.N" & Kip James. Â I think the Dudley Boys name changes were really clever though, really similar to WWE names yet different. Â It also makes me cringe when a WWE wrestler shows up, and Taz says "look who it is" sometimes even making reference to WWE yet calling them something totally different. Â Any way, what are your thoughts and opinions?
Moderators PowerButchi Posted August 10, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 10, 2014 Under new UKFF rules shit puns get punished. Keep that in mind gents.
Paid Members bAzTNM#1 Posted August 10, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted August 10, 2014 Billy Gunn in TNA was also "The Outlaw", wasn't he?
Slapnut
I always enjoyed the suggesting that RVD would eventually debut under the name "Harvey Dee". Â Bubba Ray also said on Jericho's podcast that they were originally coming in as the Deadly Boys which is clever.
Alexio
I always preferred Christian Cage to Christian. Just sounds better.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted August 10, 2014 Awards Moderator Share Posted August 10, 2014 Tomko sounded better without the 'Tyson' at the start, too. Â Edit: D'Angelo Dinero is a good name too. At least as good as Elijah Burke.
Undefeated Steak
When I first saw the title I thought TNA had changed its name to Direct Impact.

Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted August 10, 2014 Awards Moderator Share Posted August 10, 2014 Now I think about it, I think it's worse for TNA wrestlers going to WWE than the other way round. True, they don't have the name recognition problem, but Braden Walker? Marcus Cor Von?

Loki
TNA names have often been better than WWE ones, frankly. Generally people get to use their real names (BG James) or choose their own (Senshi). Â Off topic a bit, but am I right in thinking that no homegrown TNA wrestler has ever made a successful transition to the main WWE roster? That's shocking. AshC
I'm sure there was talk of King Booker coming in in gimmick as Royal T, which would have been pretty clever.

Only one I can think of is R-Truth, but even then he wasn't really "home-grown", having already had a run in the WWF a few years previously. Shane O' Mac Version 2
CM Punk? I know he made his name more in ROH, but TNA was the bigger company at that time, and Punk went on to be one of the most successful WWE wrestlers of the modern era after a brief stint in TNA. Paid Members Carbomb Posted August 10, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted August 10, 2014 See, I wasn't entirely sure about Punk. He wasn't really around in TNA long enough to be a "TNA guy", I felt - no belts, no real push, he just felt like some other promotion's guy just passing through.
