sting: as crow in 96

Hmm, so it seems.

Ted Turner bought out the MGM library from Kurt Kerkorian, who owns the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas (and quite a bit of stock in some other companies). Kekorian had no real interest in the MGM movies, other than as a decoration in his casinos and hotels. He eventually sold the film library to Turner. Turner used the library to stock his Turner Classic Movies channel.

That's really pointless and random to use it in the wrestling. There hadn't been an Oz film since Return To Oz in 1985, and the animated series ended in December 1990, a good 6 months before Nash debuted as Oz in WcW. There wasn't really anything to tie-in with. Robocop, that one made perfect sense.

Incidentally, I had forgotten until now that Kevin Sullivan managed him as Merlin, which makes as much sense as "Oz" hailing from "The Emerald City" - the capital of himself.

I always thought that Sting gimmick was closer to the baseball-wielding, facepainted gang in Warriors, myself.

The Baseball Fury's? Never really made a connection between the two myself.

That similarity seems limited to face-paint and a baseball bat.

Besides, The Fury's were pussies when it came down to it. Great look but completely outclassed by The Warriors.

The Turnball AC's though... are Aces and Eights ripping them off I ask!! Because The Turnballs AC's are clearly mustard and multi-racial.

(Denim vs leather, lack of bikes... bang goes that similarity too but fuck it)

EDIT- Quality pic. Pics from The Warriors should be encouraged.

I didn't really watch WCW back then, but to think about it, how good was Crow Sting? What a risk, eh? Repackaging a main-eventer like that. Not just turning them, but giving them a complete makeover. How often has that happened in the last 25 years, with such success?

Sting was the reason I watched WcW. I happened to turn on Nitro one night and saw The Outsiders splattering Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater and decided I might as well watch it because there was bugger all else on. The next and final match was Steiners/Harlem Heat (the night after Uncensored) and there was an nWo run-in/beatdown. I'll never know if I'd have carried on watching every week otherwise, but when Sting descended from the roof and pointed his bat at Hogan, and the place went nuts, I was hooked. I had to see what the character did next. "That's STING?" I thought, having not seen a photo of him since just after Bash At The Beach. Luckily I had jammed a tape in the VCR not long after starting to watch, in case it was worth keeping for any reason. I showed the show closing angle to my BFFF and his reaction was "That's STING??" as he only remembered the bleached blonde buzz cut from his time tagging with Bulldog. For the longest time after that, I was strictly WcW first and WWF second.

I'd say a bigger risk still than the character reinvention was not having him wrestle a televised match for fifteen and a half months. In hindsight it was genius, made the fans clamour for Sting's appearance and they went completely crazy when he did "drop in" and made his return the biggest grossing event in company history, but at the time I can imagine Sullivan and the other old heads telling Bischoff "you're mad" when they learned he didn't want Sting to wrestle.

I remember hearing a story somewhere about Sting being in a bit of bother with the lads in the locker room around that time as he had gone all born again Christian and as a result all his knowledge of what other guys got up to on the road came out, and they ended up in hot water with their wives etc, which contributed to WCW keeping him out of the ring/off the road as he was a bit unpopular in the locker room, understandably.

Not sure if I believe that myself, Real Estate Steve seems like a pretty sound bloke from all accounts I've heard, but maybe someone else has more info?

air_raid, why do you always write WCW as 'WcW'? I've noticed you do it every time and I just don't get it. I obviously understand writing 'nWo' because that's how the logo was designed, but if anything the WCW logo read 'wCw', not the other way round.

I think it's just force of habit. I think when I was young I may have mistaken the "C" in the logo for lower case for no other reason that the C is longer towards the bottom than the top. Made me think the tops of the "Ws" should be more pronounced than that of the "C" so for 20 years in handwriting or type, that's how I've done it. Now that I see it's a figment of my imagination, I might have stopped doing it. *

You refer to the new logo they introduced in 1999 when the wheels had started falling off, or perhaps the WWF-introduced red spikey one? Euuuugh!

WCW is the way champions write it.

* Well, I can't now. If I kowtow to that, it only reinforces my status as charlatan and bootlicker, desperately sucking up to the stars in the hope of ever elevating myself beyond the JTTS I know deep down I was born to be.
