Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted May 31, 2013 Author Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2013 I hope you like it. It's not your typical crime film, in fairness, it's more like a road movie but I think you'll really like it.
Paid Members Maverick Posted June 3, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted June 3, 2013 Watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, it was good but not great as I had been led to believe. It had some nice scenes and some good acting but there was no reason to drag it out for nearly three hours, it was meandering and verging on boring at times. Not a patch on the classic Westerns but still worth a watch. Was particularly surprised at how good Casey Affleck was.
Paid Members Murtz Posted June 3, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) I watched The Purge yesterday. Really liked it. It was edge of your seat stuff pretty much all the way through the 85 mins. Loved the original plot of the film and it really makes you think how people would react if the annual 'all crime allowed' night happened for real. Â Great film to watch at least once. Paid Members WWFChilli Posted June 3, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted June 3, 2013 Picked up 'Chinatown' for a quid today from CEX. I've heard great things, it better be worth my pound.
Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted June 3, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted June 3, 2013 I watched Skyfall on the plane, was a very enjoyable thriller. Never been too big of a Bond fan, but the more serious tone of this one was more up my alley. Much more tough Connery espionage than Roger Moore's bumbling twattery. King Pitcos
I thought I'd use crippledom to watch some films I wouldn't normally. The first one was House of the Rising Sun, a low (low) budget crime thriller starring Batista as an ex-cop, now bouncer at a dodgy casino/brothel. When the place gets robbed, Big Dave's tasked with tracking down those responsible, and finds himself being framed for it. It's really bad. It doesn't make sense and it's not engaging at all. Looks like it was made for nowt on a DSLR, but Amy Smart and Danny Trejo are in it as well. The pacing, composition, look, filler scenes, wooden dialogue and general poorness on every level make it seem like a decent student film. I don't recommend it. Wendell Cooley
The remake of Maniac is very good. It does the Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up POV gimmick but it works well. A guy who works in a mannequin shop kills women and scalps them. That's pretty much it, but it looks great, the gore is convincing, the violence brutal, and it's the second best film to put Goodbye Horses by Q. Lazzerus on the soundtrack. Recommended for fans of Henry and, of course, the original.
TheShowOff
Watched fatal attraction for the first time yesterday. I had no idea where the term bunny boiler came from...
Wendell Cooley
I also rewatched Casino recently and found it a bit of a slog. It takes an awful long time for the story to get going and all the characters are thoroughly unpleasant. I didn't enjoy watching Ginger screaming constantly even if it was great acting from Sharon Stone. I was sure before I started watching that it was on a par with Goodfellas but now I'm convinced it's not and that boring old received opinion is true. patiirc
Just backtracking to the Brit Gangster Flicks. Face would be my call of the ones not nominated so far. Robert Carlyle, Ray Winstone, Phil Davis and er, Damon Albarn. Â On an Irish slant Ordinary Decent Criminal was worth a watch I thought with Kevin Spacey, Helen Blaxendale and Peter Mullen. Colin Farrell and Christoph Waltz have roles in it as well. Â For an older film, The Long Arm is worth a shout. Not seen it for ages ( 20 years ish), but cat burglaries in London dealio, so not strictly a gangster film.
Awards Moderator HarmonicGenerator Posted June 3, 2013 Awards Moderator Share Posted June 3, 2013 Watched a couple of things over the weekend. Blood Diamond, which I enjoyed, but not as much as the other Zwick film I've seen, The Last Samurai, which I inexplicably consider almost a favourite. DiCaprio's good in this, but then he is in most things. Â Last night , The History Boys which I liked for the very Bennett-y lines like "He comes highly recommended" / "So did Anne of Cleeves", but couldn't help but think the stage version is the one I probably should have seen. Amazing_Red_Fan
Went to see Mud last night and I absolutely loved it. Possibly my favourite film of the year so far (close with A Place Beyond the Pines). I love this recent wave of Southern indie dramas. I've liked or loved Killer Joe, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Paperboy and Winter's Bone. Â McConaughey is fantastic in the title role. Just perfect. He's quickly becoming one of my favourite actors and somebody whose performances I look forward to. I knew he could act because of Lone Star, The Lincoln Lawyer and some other stuff but he's upping his game a lot lately. He's come a long way from leaning on people in rom com posters! sivy
Really enjoyed Snitch, the new Rock movie, similar style to Faster. Always good to see that side of The Rock.
Paid Members Scott Malbranque Posted June 4, 2013 Paid Members Share Posted June 4, 2013 (edited) Really enjoyed Snitch, the new Rock movie, similar style to Faster. Always good to see that side of The Rock. Was just about to post that I thought it was muck. Diff'rent strokes and all that, but I really thought it was very boring. I really enjoyed Faster, on the other hand.I watched The Bank Job and The Long Good Friday last night. Thoroughly enjoyed both, and I was never a fan of Bob Hoskins until last night. Absolutely fantastic thriller. Plus, I copped Pierce Brosnan and Denzil from Only Fools in it too.The gay oullad looked very like Bradley Cooper.Fin.
