Paid Members Ronnie Posted November 4, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted November 4, 2012 I'll take a stab at 'Daily Buzzard' voting for Laurie Penny. I don't know whether he voted for her, but I did. Presumably by your attributing it to Happ she's a left-wing poster-girl - she might be, I wouldn't know. I voted for her on the basis of the one thing I know about her, which is shown on . David Starkey is making a point on the issue to hand ("Britishness") and she interrupts him to try to paint him as a tax-evader, when she has no basis to think that he is one and which was an untrue charge. Starkey puts things straight and then points out that he works free of charge whilst Penny saw an event cancelled that she was invited to attend for the Thomas Payne Society by demanding a much larger fee than they could afford, all whilst being a privately educated girl who earns a living trumpeting socialist values.  She struck me as a nob for taking that clumsy, personal approach in the first place, but she was elevated to twat level for her reaction to the rebuttal, pouting like a petulant child after she tried to make things personal and it backfired, then doing the stroppy "I'm not going to respond to that" after first requesting a right to reply only to find her denials countered.  Other than that I have no idea who she is, but she strikes me as a twat on the basis of this one episode alone and so I nominated her. Paid Members Up Chuck Posted November 4, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted November 4, 2012 (edited) all whilst being a privately educated girl who earns a living trumpeting socialist values. Â Haven't seen the clip so can't comment on that, but that's such a naff criticism. What was she supposed to do, not go to the school her parents sent her to in case it didn't match with political views she might develop as an adult? She's said herself that being aware of how privileged she was made her more committed to advocating a fairer system for everyone. Nowt wrong with that. Â EDIT: Should point out that I generally quite like her and follow her on Twitter, but I have found some of her arguments towards individual people a bit lacking in the past. I think she just needs to keep her cool and not resort to personal jibes, really. Edited November 4, 2012 by opcws
Magnum
Inevitably happens every year, but seeing the mention of Starkey is one of my 'I knew there was someone I forgot...' moments.
Paid Members Ronnie Posted November 4, 2012 Paid Members Share Posted November 4, 2012 all whilst being a privately educated girl who earns a living trumpeting socialist values. Â Haven't seen the clip so can't comment on that, but that's such a naff criticism. Well done. You removed the initial part of that sentence to make it appear that the argument was of the kind "somebody brought up in a slave-holding family can't possibly later decry slavery" or "somebody brought up with privilege can't later note that the poor deserve a better deal." Replace the bit that you chopped and the argument becomes less easy to pick apart. Â Starkey ... points out that he works free of charge whilst Penny saw an event cancelled that she was invited to attend for the Thomas Payne Society by demanding a much larger fee than they could afford, all whilst being a privately educated girl who earns a living trumpeting socialist values. Â Starkey was asked to attend an event and debate with Penny. He was happy to do it free of charge as part of the civic duty that he considers to be part of "Britishness". Penny, however, the person who initiated a blind-side ad-hominen attack attempting to paint Starkey as one of those rich and privileged who evade tax whilst leaving the less-well-off majority having to pay it, "insisted on charging such a large fee that the event had to be cancelled". And there's the tie-in: she's from a privileged background but earns a living trumpeting socialist values, and yet when put in a position to make a contribution to the general good in the form of a debate with this man it was she whose position was "I'll say it if you pay it". Â I was leafing through a book earlier today which contained a passage in which a student and his friend in 1936 were awaiting the arrival of his mother on a train. The lady was a socialist MP and a simple line of dialogue from the son was "She'll be in third class. It's a matter of principle." That fits. Penny's refusal to make a contribution without a large fee (causing the event's cancellation) is the opposite to that, and that's why I don't find Starkey's pointing that out when he was the one on the end of an attempted 'in it for himself' attack to be 'naff' at all.
