Accused: The Fake Grooming Scandal on Channel 4.

I was aware of the case when it came to trial, but hadn't seen much about it before then, largely because I have zero friends on social media who are likely to share any posts scaremongering about grooming gangs. This was just crazy though. The so-called "internet sleuths" came across as total idiots, one of them saying about their investigation of a suspect, "I googled him". Is that the limit of your investigational abilities? Then there's the grim determination of people to cling to their beliefs despite evidence to the contrary. I'm all for believing victims/survivors of sexual abuse, and take a dim view of people who demand forensic/CCTV/eyewitness evidence for events that took place several years previously. So I've no problem at all with people who chose to believe Eleanor Williams initial Facebook post, especially when there were graphic photos her ijnuries. But as things unfolded even Tommeh Robinbson backed off from involvement in the case, saying things didn't quite add up. The evidence disappeared, with her being caught alone on CCTV at the times she said abuse was taking place (and although not mentioned in the documentary as far as I can remember, one of the suspects was in alleged to be with her in Amsterdam when phone and bank records said he was back in Barrow-in-Furness), and six phones in her possession demonstrated to have been used to create fake social media profiles to try and implicate the suspects. But despite all this, you hard people hiring mini-buses to travel to the court case to stand outside abusing the police and journalists (shades of the UKFF's own Hollie Greig thread) saying it was all a cover-up. I don't understand the logic in automatically distrusting what the so-called mainstream media (that would be, newspapers, journalists etc, who are regulard and bound by a code of conduct) say, yet the uncorroborated words of any random person online are taken as gospel truth and cannot be questioned even when evidence says they are lying.

The BBC Three documentary from last year was a lot better I thought. I wonder if it was just a coincidence but the Channel 4 one was aired the same day she was released from prison.

500 Days in the Wild (think it's on Paramount+)

A woman sets out to travel down the Trans-Canada Trail single-handedly, hoping to complete it in 500 days. Fair to say it doesn't work out that way. Lovely to look at but also quite deceiving. Worth a watch if you just want to look at beautiful landscapes for a couple of hours.

Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands (BBC iPlayer)

Serves its purpose of highlighting a bunch of bands you may never have heard of - I'd only heard of one or two. Lots of nice interviews, some interesting observations on the music industry, and lots of stuff to pack your Spotify playlist with.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story

Slightly disappointing. Far too much focus on the first Superman film (we all know that story) and some weird editing choices - there's a scene where they segue from Reeve falling off a horse to him lying in hospital on a ventilator in Rear Window. What the fuck! But still strong on his charity work and relationship with his families.

The Contestant

This is the one about that Japanese gameshow where the guy had to live off magazine competition wins for a year and didn't know he was being filmed the whole time. Does an amazing job of showing how this wasn't funny at all and was actually horrible and irresponsible. Excellent.

Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer

Watchable because, well, it's Werner. But also disappointingly shallow and glosses over huge chunks of his life and career for the expected stuff about his Klaus Kinski collaborations. But it's Werner so you should watch it.

I started listening to the Sporting Giants: Alex Ferguson pods on BBC Sounds. First episode is his background and success with Aberdeen. It's a really good listen. Second episode is the rebuild at Man United in the late 80s. Probably a lot of stories you've heard a hundred times, Mark Robins, blah, blah, but other than the fact that the 1993/94 season just doesn't exist in their timeline, it's very good again. I went into episode 3 a bit dulled by the jump from first title to Cantona kick and then episode 3 is just bollocks. I swear Roy Keane's name doesn't come up at all except for them saying he was sent off in the 1999 CL semi-final, which isn't even right. I can only assume he didn't want to interview for it and Cole and Yorke did so the narrative is all about them. Keane's virtuoso performance in the semi-final 2nd leg is completely ignored. 

I've given up on it.

Anyone been watching the Marilyn Manson documentary on C4?

I knew he was a wrong ‘un from reading his autobiography years ago and then reading about the allegations against him but listening to all those women is horrendous. Evan Rachel Wood’s account is just heartbreaking. For his lawyer to sit there and rubbish all the claims made me so angry. The manipulation and gaslighting is absolutely incredible.

Just reading this article was difficult enough, I'm not sure I could siit through a doc. I've heard it's equally as comprehensive and that all the voices are being heard, which is good to hear.

It’s interesting that they feature Madonna Wayne Gacy in the interviews and get his perspective although he doesn’t really offer any damning insight. The footage from the time plays somewhat into MM’s defence though showing rabid young girls saying how much they worship him and one even screams down the camera about wanting to rape Twiggy Ramirez. This could be used as those young girls having false memories and/or fabricating stories.

It’s not a particularly well-made documentary but it certainly brings everything to the mainstream and gives a louder voice to those women.

I believe it's just opened up nationwide in cinemas so might be a bit longer before it starts on streaming.
