saw Red Dawn for the first time the other night. I think it's the kind of movie you can't really watch now and understand the reaction that it got on release. At the time of release it was seen as very controversial, a quick browse through the imdb boards proves that a lot of people still hate the movie (and not in the way that they just didn't enjoy it) depending on their political preference. It of course tell the story of a Russian soldiers invading the USA, the story focusses on a group of teenages who rebel and fight back against the Russians. It was released during the height of the cold war where people genuinely thought that something was about to kick off. I'll never really understand how it must have felt to see it on release and it's easy to just see it as a sub-par action flick which is a little bit too stupid to take seriously, but it's an interesting movie and with the story that it tackled.

Quick bit of trivia i learnt after watching the movie, the US military move to capture Saddam Hussein was called Operation Red Dawn, and the moves they performed were called Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2 after the movie.

Yeah, if you enjoy a good action flick, definitely go and see Dredd. It's the best comicbook adaptation in years, mainly by dint of being a thoroughly well made, uncomplicated action film. My film of the year so far.

Have The Lord of the Ring films aged badly? I know its only roughly 10 years since they come out, but Ive just watched the first two for the first time, and was very underwhelmed by them. Not just the story, but the actual visual's and CGI are not half as good as I thought they would be. For a blockbuster with tens of millions of dollars as a budget, I was disappointed by how ropey some of it looked. Even the 'epic' final battle at the end of the second film didnt look THAT much better than something from Spartacus (the S2 finale) or Game of Thrones. Stuff like the scenes with the trees looked straight from the 80s.

I usually roughly agree with IMDB on most films, but I shouldnt have looked at the ratings for these films before watching it, as it made me expect outstanding films, which they were not for me. Decent, but nothing more than that. I was thinking that they would be so good, that I would want to immediately watch the next one straight away. Thats not the case though, as it took a few weeks for me to watch the second one after the first, and Im not excited at all about starting with the third one.

Watched The Dinosaur Project last night. A quick little straight to DVD British film that was actually pretty good for what it was. One for Millard, as it's based around Cryptozoology, in particular the search for the Mokele Mbembe. The script isn't great nor is the majority of the acting but hey it's a cheap film and a great advert for the GoPro cameras.

Watched The Sweeney today.

The main problem I have with the film is Ray Winstone. Completely unlikeable, far too vicious, too corrupt to be Jack Regan, not corrupt enough to be Jack Bauer, shags the IA head's wife without an ounce of shame, throttles the poor bastard when he's confronted about it, and when she gets shot he's only sorry that he got caught and her death doesn't really affect him at all. Plan B carries the film because even though he's more vicious than George Carter ever was he actually showed some concern about who got caught up in the plot. Jack teased that about getting the hump over the innocent girl, but his bit-on-the-side getting clipped barely registered.

Where it's an easy habit to make a remake all about navel-gazing and brooding about what the job does to you, that's what the TV series actually fucking did here and there, especially in the latter stages and especially with Thaw's Regan. Ray Winstone's Teflon Jack act had nothing that left a scar - bad guys caught, back to work on Monday, a quick look back over his shoulder at the pencil-neck he's just cucked and off to the next job. It's more than a little hollow.

I actually considered the same thing! I need more Dredd, it was great.

In my Letterboxd review (plug) I suggested it would make a great tv series, in the mode of Deadwood, and I'm incredibly happy to read that it's occurred to Alex Garland too. That would be the awesomest thing.

That would be a great idea. The movie played out like a comic issue anyway, it really worked well like that. So to have a series like that would definitely be something I'd watch.

Blood & Bone - Watched this on (US) Netflix on Friday night. Mrs Mike was out, I had chicken, beer & weed and wanted something to compliment my low-brow evening. This was perfect! It was rated 4.5 stars by Netflix users (I know

I really enjoyed Dredd like others have in this thread.

Me and one of the lads I went to see it with are already talking about a second trip to see it.

Smae here. Amazing what they got out of the budget. I particularly like the Judges uniforms. I heard the film was violent but I was surprised by two moments of that type. Nice to see a gritty comic book film.
