I'm trying to read one fiction book in addition to the shit load of non-fiction stuff I get through, so recommendations appreciated (cheers to whoever said House of Leaves).

Currently chugging through 'The Idiot' by Dostoevsky. 'Crime and Punishment' is one of my top five novels ever, so thought I would give this a bash. The first fifty pages drag quite a bit, but it's really starting to pick up now I'm a bit further one. The idea of writing about a completely perfect character is interest, but I'm not sure if it really engenders itself to a great novel. It tends to be the negative aspects of personality that make something of interest.

onto my second John Ronson book 'You Have Been Publically Shamed'. Book title says it all really, Ronson looks into fairly well known cases of public humiliation. First one is about a journalist who got ousted for using false quotes in an article. Intetesting stuff.

Oh yeah... Murakami. I finished Dance, Dance, Dance in a few short days and really enjoyed it. The ending was sweet nothing but I sensed it was going to go that way. He's a writer that plays by his own rules and you're not necessarily going to get what you want. The novel seemed like one twisted portrait of the characters mind that a story might have sprung from but just as easily might not have. The Sheep Man was very Silent Hill and I wish there was more of that and less perving in hotel lobbies. The cynic in me would say it wasn't very well thought out, were you ever going anywhere with this?, but again that seems his style.

Norwegian Wood next, I guess.

My favourite of his books - really enjoyed it. I like his style of writing too.

Norwegian Wood is probably my favourite Murakami book.

I've not long finished The Psychopath Test and I'm currently reading Them. Love his stuff. I watched his documentary on Stanley Kubrick's personal archives recently too which was great. I'm waiting for tickets for the Birmingham date of his Psychopath Night talk to go on sale.

I've never been one for comics and graphic novels, really. Tried over the years, but could never enjoy it quite enough to stick with it. But I enjoyed Preacher the TV show so much I bought book one (issues 1-12) of the Preacher comics. And damn is it good. The story is different in a lot of ways to the TV show but that's fine by me. I've been thinking of what to do with all my book shelf space since I got a Kindle. This could be the answer.

I'm currently blasting through Trainspotting, which so far is FANTASTIC. I was taken aback when I saw it was written all in a Scottish "twang", (if that's the right context for that word), but its just great. I've also ordered its sequel Porno to read straight after.

Quick edit: Does anybody have any recommendations for books? I have a very wide spectrum of what I like to read, so no real genre sticks out as a favourite of mine.

Read the prequel to Trainspotting, Skagboys. I genuinly believe it's far, far superior. Much more emotional, introspective, less punk shock kind of style writing. Much more steeped in its era, too.

Marabou Stork Nightmares is his best one though. Jesus.

Skagboys is on my list, so i'll get that very soon.

On a side note, has anybody ever had issues purchasing books from Amazon, via the other sellers stores? I've orderd two books, (Porno and Ken Follet's "The Pillars of The Earth"), the latter came fairly quickly and was in good condition. Porno still hasnt arived, despite me contacting the seller and all sort of gubbins. the only downfall is I cant open a case on Amazon yet, as the expected delivery is "between 24/08 and 20/09", despite me ordering it 2 weeks ago.

My Granddad recommended it to me, and its been on my list for aaaages, so finally managed to get my hands on it. I'll start on that once I've got a few more smaller books out of the way. At 1000+ pages it'll be the longest book I've ever read hah.
