Paid Members Sergio Mendacious Posted October 9, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 9, 2014 My wife had to go in as an emergency to have her appendix out, and we'd been chancing it by not having insurance for her — the emergency room alone cost about $2k, but if we didn't get relief because we live in a (relative) socialist paradise in NYC, the whole deal would've come to $30k+ — as it is, we're left paying off $5k. Loki
Yes, back to the Mac debate...can someone who knows anything about computers tell me whether this is a decent machine/price?  It'll be used for photo editing and graphics work for the most part.  http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Apple_MacBook_Air_4th_Gen_Core_i5_4GB_128GB_SSD_13.3_inch_Mac_OS_X_10.9_Mav_MD760B-B/version.asp#feedback  *waves dick*  It's a little creaky as it's only a single core i5 by the looks of it.  I've got a single core i7 and it's ok but Mavericks has kind of fucked it over.  What software specifically are you looking to run? Paid Members John Matrix Posted October 10, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 10, 2014 Photoshop and Illustrator specifically mate. Other than that, just general computer use - it's just that Mrs Matrix has Apple devices, so it seemed to make sense go to the Mac route so everything could talk to one another. King Coconut
No, no, no, no. What would make sense is if Mrs Matrix went the non-Mac route. You don't fix a broken leg by breaking an arm.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted October 10, 2014 Moderators Share Posted October 10, 2014 Have you not watched the video that's doing the rounds this week?Even for your creative needs, Microsoft is the way to go. They got that shit. You want to be a part of the future don't you?

Paid Members Au Posted October 10, 2014 Paid Members Share Posted October 10, 2014 It's a swish video but given that Adobe have always had a very good relationship with Apple I can't see that sort of thing being unique to Surface. Â In fact, I'm starting to have doubts that Microsoft are going to find much more traction in mobile and tablet than they do already and if there's something Windows doesn't lend itself well to, it's high-end specialised programs. Loki
Yes, let's back Microsoft in the tablet and mobile market. that's always worked in the past    Anyone recommending Windows PCs to women/parents/non-techy geeks is on a hiding to nothing.  I got my Dad an iPad and he's not touched his PC since, plus I don't have to field weekly IT support calls from him when Windows decides to get infected/reconfigure itself/update and stop working, and all the other nonsense.  I've recently started working with Microsoft, and it's not great news to discover that nobody internally there uses Windows 8, or at the very least they all download a freeware app to make it function like Windows 7.  And all the video/music/sound departments (media professionals essentially) there use Macs anyway!  But aaaaaanyway.... the eternal wrangling continues

Does it not? How do you mean? Like, just creative/design stuff, or generally? There's gotta be a good reason they're the standard for business and technology, no? Sphinx
I hadn't heard anything of the Surface Pro (been out of the loop on technology lately) until Chest mentioned it, but it does look great. I'm tempted to treat myself with one.  Photoshop and Illustrator specifically mate. Other than that, just general computer use - it's just that Mrs Matrix has Apple devices, so it seemed to make sense go to the Mac route so everything could talk to one another. I'm no expert, but Apple's marketing is based around the idea that you may as well get the whole family - if you've got an iPhone and an iPad for example, you ought to get a Mac if you're looking for a computer. Whilst I imagine they've made it dead easy to link everything up, I don't think it's worth paying extra if that's the sole reason. In my experience, I've never had any issues linking iPhones and iPods to Windows PCs. I'm not sure how iCloud works with Macs - that may make a bigger difference.  I personally prefer Windows. I like that there's no compatibility issues and I already know how the system works. I never got on with how Macs worked. Though Macs are known to be industry standard in the media field, and I see you're saying about getting Photoshop and Illustrator, I've never had any issues with it on Windows. There's no right or wrong answer, but I think Windows laptops/PCs give you better value for money than Apple's.

But even if the Windows bloke opposite can do the same job in half the time, his laptop won't look as expensive, so result!
Bradyisgod22
I've heard a lot about those surface pros. Would they be able to run Football Manager and or TEW 2013? Would be pretty sweet to have the full version of FM on the move. Not quite sure what it would be like to play touch screen wise though.
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted October 11, 2014 Moderators Share Posted October 11, 2014 Mine has an i7 processor and 8gb RAM; you can put anything you'd put on your normal laptop on there. Â Solid state hard drive, too. Very slick.
