The Streisand Effect. The Mandela Effect is people misremembering things that they genuinely believed (Mandela died in prison, Fruit of the Loom had a cornucopia in the logo, etc). The Streisand Effect is when Barbra Streisand tried to stop people seeing information about her mansion, leading to lots of people sharing information about her mansion. ...or is this now a case of the Mandela Effect? Streisand Effect, bollocks - you're right. I typoed, getting my effects mixed up. Not the thread for it, but I'd never actually heard of anyone thinking Mandela dying in prison; certainly not to the point it was widespread, so I think a case could be made for 'the Mandela Effect' in itself being a victim of the Mandela Effect... Yeah personally I think the Pugwash effect would be more suitable. Quote

The woman who invented the Mandela Effect - who was a credulous paranormal "ghosthunter" type - believed it and insists it was a really widespread belief, with people being convinced that they remember seeing a big state funeral in the 1980s. There's two points I always bring up to counter that - one is that I doubt you'll find a single person in South Africa with that false belief (and probably not in the UK either), and the other is that you'd hardly expect a political prisoner to have been given a big public state funeral! So I live in the USA right and I always think it is StreisLAND, I say it more often than not, and get ridiculed because of it. I have always thought this mistake was something that was ingrained in me from growing up in the UK. So seeing you post this has me even more convinced. Confidence bias meets Nelson Mandela tring to hide photos of his mansion innit. Quote
