Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 14 Paid Members Posted July 14 On Radio 2, when I go to therapy on Fridays they always have it on the digital radio in reception and the first thing I do is switch it over to 6Music. My mental health is bad enough without having to endure Radio 2 for even just a few minutes. Quote

He must be happy enough doing Sounds of the Eighties and randomly turning up if Sara Cox or Vernon Kate go on holiday. If they really wanted to get noticed they'd try and get Mark & Lard on that early drive spot... Quote

Paid Members Carbomb Posted yesterday at 11:19 AM Paid Members Posted yesterday at 11:19 AM I've become a regular listener to Classic Folk, the weekly internet radio show put out by the English Folk Dance & Song Society - there's always a really good mix of trad, modern, Celtic, English, Americana, etc. This week's a repeat in tribute to Sandra Kerr following her passing last week - it has an interview with her at Sidmouth Folk Festival in 2013. There's a section where she talks about her move up to Northumbria, and how she fell in love with the region and its traditions (which might be of interest to several on here, including @HarmonicGenerator), at roughly the one-hour mark. https://www.efdss.org/about-us/folk-player/listen-classic-folk# Quote

Paid Members Gus Mears Posted 7 hours ago Paid Members Posted 7 hours ago Pleased you're enjoying it, Carbomb. God, I think that genre is shite. My mum subjected me to about two hours of Blackmore's Night in the car last year and I was ready to dive onto the motorway. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted 5 hours ago Paid Members Posted 5 hours ago Hey, we like what we like, right? No place to understand that better than a wrestling fan forum. Folk's a pretty wide genre. If you like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Dubliners, Christy Moore, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, etc., then you like some folk at least. Quote
Paid Members Gus Mears Posted 1 hour ago Paid Members Posted 1 hour ago Didn't mean to piss on your chips, Bomber! All of the above are great - just flashbacks to a harrowing car journey and many songs about wassailing. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted 1 hour ago Paid Members Posted 1 hour ago Blackmore's Night are absolute dogshit, in fairness, and I say that as someone who was into them as a weird teenager. The last couple of years I've got really back into folk music in a big way - collectively the Carthy/Waterson family probably make up half of my most listened to artists of the last two years - but I do tend to shy away from the more fiddle-dee-dee hey-nonny-nonny side of it all, and lean more towards old workers' songs and protest music. All of the above are great - just flashbacks to a harrowing car journey and many songs about wassailing. Nah, it's fair enough. As I say, we like what we like, and that includes not liking stuff as well. "Folk" can be a bit of a nebulous term anyway. Folk music historian Steve Roud said "Folk music is music played by a folk musician, and a folk musician is someone who plays folk music". Hell, Louis Armstrong said "All music is folk music - ain't no horse ever played a trumpet". As regards the "Send the buggers back" thing in PN, it's funny actually how many folkies are the diametric opposite: a lot of them are Marxists, socialists, and communists. That link I posted above, Sandra Kerr talks about being part of the Anti-Capitalist League, and various other table-thumping, tankard-swinging red endeavours. EDIT: Pat makes a good point. I love trad as much as any other kind of folk, but there's room for loads. I also love my old socialist anthems and worker/protest songs. First song I learned to play and sing on my mandolin was Guantanamera. Edited 1 hour ago by Carbomb Kevin Pressman Quote
