Paid Members Gus Mears Posted August 31 Paid Members Share Posted August 31 Get your bucket hat on and lead the pub in a heartfeld rendition of Wonderwall because Oasis are back and people are going MAD FER IT. Always the Mongo McMichael of the 4 Horsemen of Britpop behind Pulp, Blur and Suede in my eyes. Good on them for absolutely coining it in with this though. Anyone remortgaged the house to go? Paid Members TheBurningRed Posted August 31 Paid Members Share Posted August 31 Really thought I was getting tickets this morning. Was in the virtual waiting room in the low numbers, got in, selected two tickets and it just buffered for ages before kicking us out. The luck I thought I had turned to shit. I’m sure some kind person will stream it on YouTube.
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted August 31 Paid Members Share Posted August 31 Afternoon Gus. I've never regarded Suede as Britpop personally, they always fall into that pre-britpop era inhabited by The Stone Roses and the jangly C86 era Primal Scream but that's by the by. Ticketmaster can go fuck itself every which way it wants. I'd sooner not go to stuff than buy anything through them. As for Oasis, there are loads of Beatles tribute bands you can see cheaper. The only good thing to come out of this whole Oasis thing is the news that Morrisey said yes to a Smiths reunion for 2025 and Johnny Marr never even replied to the inquiry, and when he was asked by a fan on Twitter if the Smiths were getting back together just posted a picture of Nigel Farage which no further comment. God love Johnny Marr.
wordsfromlee
Is it even the full band reforming or just Liam and Noel?
deathrey
No one seems to care about anyone but Liam and Noel. Was it Tuesday they reformed? It was live breaking news on the BBC, they were doing rolling live updates. It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. It's not like a massive incident were breaking news of survivors, injured etc is happening. John from Saddleworth giving his opinion on Oasis reforming is not news. I desperately want to agree with this, but I can't. If you agree with this, you're saying that culture can never be news which I just don't think is true and would be sad if it was. I couldn't give a monkeys about Oasis and absolutely won't be going, but this is a huge cultural moment. For whatever reason they've defined a generation, and had an influence on every generation that followed. Literally millions of people are *still* trying to get tickets. Pretty much an entire country has been moved by a musical group reforming, and it'll have a huge effect on the mood AND economy of the country. I think it really is news. Still... shit band. Their best tunes weren't on their albums, and their best albums were their so called shit ones.

Moderators neil Posted August 31 Moderators Share Posted August 31 Was it really breaking news? Like they interrupted regular scheduled shows for it? That is sheer madness if so. I'd be mildly interested in seeing the original lineup just do Definitely Maybe. I've come around on Definitely Maybe in the last 10 years but I definitely hated Oasis at the time and pretty much everything else they've done. As a teenager who was into guitars, mostly American alternative, at the time you got endless shit from people calling you a grunger who listened (or claimed to) garage/jungle, but then when Oasis became popular they were suddenly walking around with a french crop going on about how much they loved a bit of guitar. And, I'd argue a street vox pop is far more relevant for this than something Stevie from Sidcup has no real idea about. It's obviously huge news, and a rolling feed of updates is fine. I think people just get funny about stuff they don't personally like. BBC do rolling live blogs pinned to the home page for football results, GCSE results and the Olympic's too. It's not like they've only ever done it for serial killings, wars and Oasis. It's clearly huge news, possibly the biggest music story in years in this country and it's quite nice to know the country can still be moved by music in this way. Even if that music is derivative and not as good as Pulp.
deathrey
What @King Coconutsaid. I totally understand it being headline news but not rolling news. Cultural stuff is important. Football matches are an on-going thing - there are goals scored, people given red cards etc it is worthy of the rolling news format. A finite story with no actual updates is not. NeverYield
For the most part it's just annoying whiney singing, not for me at all. I like a few of their tracks but in general they're not for me. I appreciate the impact they've had on English culture though, I also find it comical how many people are pretending to be ecstatic about the reunion, I've seen a few people I know don't really go in for that sort of thing pretend to be wrapped up in the hype. Bizarre.

Vox pops are the worst and laziest form of TV news. They just keep filming until they've got a couple of opinions on each side. Nothing good has ever come from a vox pop unless it's this
The Gaffer
I can understand the derision but I'm totally a fan of their gutter rock. Post Be Here Now, too. Standing on the Shoulders and Heathen Chemistry have some good tunes. Couldn't bring myself or my wallet to hop into the golden ticket hunt but as a music nerd I can't help but love - misplaced though the yearning may be - that in an age where people into music are often going on about how an act can never be this big again, this was the first time since Bowie kicking it that I was doing the groceries and all the front pages at the counter had a fucking band on the front pages. It's kind of unseemly and nuts today. They do have that. I find it exciting, from afar.

Paid Members Gus Mears Posted August 31 Author Paid Members Share Posted August 31 Deathrey is right that live coverage is ridiculous, but I'd still take rolling news about this rather than when they had 48 hours about King Charles' prostate.
