Inspired by the Facebook group of the same name, do you have any interests that you absolutely know are boring as fuck to the regular person, but you don’t give a shit and embrace the banality?

Maps are mine, since being a child I’ve always been intrigued by maps and how they’ve changed as charting them becomes more accurate. I’ve got old maps which are obsolete now and serve no purpose other than historical relics.

I try not to repeat myself but I mentioned in the gaming thread how I’m currently doing an around the world flight on Flight Simulator in bite size one hour chunks, starting in Los Angeles. This involves planning ahead to avoid just flying over expanses of water for five hours so I’ve just gone from northern Canada over to Greenland and love looking at the ground from a few thousand feet high!

I’ve also just bought a dashcam and cannot wait to install and use it. I’m not going to be one of those traffic nonces who report bad drivers though, snitches get stitches.

I don't think the average non watcher of wrestling would say it's dull, boring etc. Stupid, childish, ridiculous etc but not really in keeping with the point of the thread.

Mine would probably be walking, I walk Minimum 30,000 steps a day, generally takes me about 4 hours (weekends in one go, weekdays split into 2 hours 1 hour 1 hour. Obviously walking is fine but people can't understand how I can walk for that long and say how boring it must be etc. I love it, obv I've got podcasts I listen to, so I find it perfect. It's a lot of walking  and at quite a fast past too so I get it.

Obv I wouldn't say walking is boring per se, but to the extent I do it then I get why people wouldn't dream of doing it, not just from.a fitness stand point but just trying to stay interested for that long. Fuck it  I love nothing more than getting up at 5.30 on a Saturday, doing my 30k and being home by 10am to do what I want with the day all in the knowledge I've already burnt over 2000 calories.

Hah yeah - That's the other thing, very much a street walker too, don't go for the "sights" which adds to the dullness I guess, just walk round the estates near me on loops etc, so don't touch fields or anything like that. It's for the exercise for me so don't really take in where I am just try to keep the pace up. Anyway yeah that's mine!

To a lot of other people it's dull but I di collect quite a few things.

I collect coins

I collect trading cards - pokemon, sports, film and TV and unique one off sets too

I also collect a lot of autographs from all different kinds of celebrity and sports.

My wrestling signed collection is probably worth north of £50,000

I keep all of my collectables in a secure storage run by a company in Cardiff.

I am the same. Except I normally have an end goal or destination. For me it is Supermarkets. Even if we just need 1 or 2 bits, off i'll go for my daily walk. The big Asda is in Town, 1.8 miles. The smaller Asda is 1.5 miles away (and now has an Lidl across the road). To recycle the plastic we can't put in with the bin collection, a trip to Tesco. 2.3 miles is the nearest or 3.1 to the massive one which used to have some staff on Rollerskates as it was that big. But for some of the harder to get vegan products we use, Sainsbury's which is 3.3 miles away. 90% of the time it is also my podcast listening time, sometimes music, but mostly podcasts.

I also walk to my local cinema. Normally at least once a week (although I haven't been often in the last month due to poor releases). To add to the dullness when I do go to the cinema I record a podcast of me talking about the film I am going to see and on the way back I discuss my thoughts on it. Beat that you dull bastards.

@Keith HouchenI got a really interesting book the other week called Transit Maps Of The World, which consists of prints of all the maps for various transit and metro routes the world over. The one of Tokyo's is a work of art. The same author also did one of airport flightpath maps, which may also be worth a look. I picked up a central London map and an underground map when I was down there for AEW in August as well. My gran always used to bring me one back whenever she went to London.

That sounds incredible!

Notebooks and pens - well, more the fountain pen ink, but it's more the notebooks I'm interested in because I enjoy the sensory quality of writing in them.

Initially got into it because of the YouTube channel Wood & Graphite (whose tagline is "Analog is not dead"), which is more of a pencil and notebook enthusiast's channel, but the videos are quite well made, and there's a cosy quality to them that I enjoy. Unfortunately, the guy who made it, TJ, has moved on to other things, but I still enjoy re-watching for "comfort viewing", plus there are similar channels as well.

This was the video that originally drew me in - I've no interest in the actual thing he's talking about, but it was such a pleasant video that I started watching the rest:

Watched some of the notebook ones:

Anyway, because of this channel and the ones it led me to, I started properly investing in nice stationery to write with. I got my Star Trek-themed fountain pen (that I've mentioned on here before - got it with Latinum Exchange tokens I got from buying DS9 VHS back in the 90s; apparently it's really rare now, so it's quite valuable), I got some lovely ink (Waterman Mystic Blue), and a selection of different notebooks for journalling or just for taking reminders or lists or putting down ideas when I'm out and about.

So far, the best journalling notebooks I've had are the Darkstar ones (which, sadly, are no longer being made), but I also got some nice BackPocket ones. Currently using a Field Notes National Parks special edition - lovely covers, they feel good in the hand, but unfortunately are no good for fountain pen ink; they bleed over badly. Having to use a biro, which, to be fair, I don't mind when it's a good one, but I'm looking forward to getting back to using my beloved fountain pen.

For my pocket, I've been using small red Silvines (yes, a dirty socialist like me carries around a little red book), and I got this really nice pocket fountain pen made by Kaweco:

kaweco_classic_sport_fountain_pen_1.jpg

Got mine in green. Got a nice little converter cartridge that allows me to use the same fountain pen ink.

I really wanted to get one of the metal ones - they do them in steel or brass, but they're very expensive.

Got my notebooks from Nero's Notes, who always send the order wrapped beautifully in crepe paper - I often feel bad just for opening the package, but it's all part of a very satisfying experience.

Got my pens from CultPens (no, not Pen Island's website).

I watch a lot of "dull" content on YouTube (freight hopping, scenic routes on trains, a man that reviews random "blank" VHS tapes he buys in thrift stores) but I find them quite exciting so not sure it counts.

Recently I've started looking up routes or places whilst watching films or TV, mostly in America, and mostly the train routes.

I think it started when I watched The Office and I wanted to see how far it was from Scranton to New York/Philadelphia and Utica, as they make it sound like its just down the road.

I like to look up the route, the things to do there, the restaurants, cafes, shops, have a look around on Maps, look up the price of things and generally have a nosey around.

Did it last night with that awful Christmas film I watched. It was set in a "Central Falls" so I had a look around the Rhode Island one and Pawtucket, which is quite near as well. Looks nice and has a reasonably priced Colombian restaurant.

I'll never go.

My most dull interest is probably TV shows that cover things like hotels, airports, cruises.. those sorts of things. If it's something about Heathrow or Claridges or whatever I love it. No fucking idea why but I do. Same with anything involving trains and travelling. Maybe it's just the curiosity and the fact I don't need to use my brain.
